It's not unusual for stand-up comedy shows to feature high-profile comics making unannounced appearances to workshop some material or perform a tight five.

But the audience at the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles got the ultimate surprise guest on Tuesday night when Sir Paul McCartney briefly popped up on stage.

The 82-year-old Beatle was making an appearance during his friend Deon Cole's stand-up set, after the 52-year-old Black-ish star said the two had smoked up backstage.

'I got high with my friend tonight, and we had a good time. Come here,' Cole said while coyly keeping his guest's identity secret in a clip of the interaction that he shared to X (formerly Twitter).

'Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for my friend Paul McCartney,' he continued.

McCartney could be seen slinking through the crowd during the comedian's introduction, but as soon as the audience got a good look at him on stage they erupted into cheers.

The comic embraced the singer–songwriter, who started to giggle as Cole leaned his head against him.

McCartney, who wore a navy windbreaker with breast pockets, a blue striped shirt, dark jeans and charcoal sneakers, pointed at his watch as his pal said off mic, 'I was bombing my a** off!'

'You were bombing your a** off,' McCartney parroted, and Cole replied, 'Yeah, because of that good s*** you've got.'

McCartney got another chuckle out of the audience when he shot back, 'Oh, it wasn't my fault. Don't blame me!'

Cole then took a moment to rib the audience members for his allegedly lackluster reception.

'I had to smoke, and that's why this is happening,' he said, 'and y'all motherf***ers did not give no love to me at all tonight.'

After an audience member shouted back that they did appreciate him, Cole shouted, 'Shut the f*** up!'

The supposedly lackluster set didn't seem to bother McCartney at all, who muttered, 'I’ve just been enjoying seeing you working through this material — and you’re right, some of it bombed.'

Cole had a laugh but admitted he would rather bomb 'in front of 40 instead of 4,000.'

Cole asked if McCartney ever 'bombed,' and he said the Beatles had some rough nights in their early days. 'In the beginning, when we started out, guys used to throw pennies at us,' he admitted

He turned the tables then and asked the Wings leader if he ever 'bombed' in concert.
