Award Season - Little Miss Big Winner

February 25th, 2007

While the Independent Spirit Award announces their nominations earlier than anyone else, they only handed the awards last night. The two big winners were Little Miss Sunshine and Half Nelson, but both have to be seen as underdogs for tonight's Oscars. More...

Award Season - Fighting for Independence

November 29th, 2006

As always, Award Season officially begins with the announcing of the Independent Spirit Award nominations. While this is the first major awards to announce their nominations, they are one of the last to hand them out so the nominees have a long wait ahead of them. More...

Home Market Stands United

September 16th, 2006

There was only one new release to crack the top five, or the top ten for that matter, but it was the number one rental. United 93 was that release with $8.27 million during its first week of release. More...

DVD Releases for August 29, 2006

August 28th, 2006

A busy week with nearly 50 films making the list. Of those, there are more than half-a-dozen that are easily worth picking up and with several being contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. I was able to narrow it down to two, Arrested Development - Season 3 - Buy from Amazon and The Tick Vs. Season One - Buy from Amazon, with a couple of honorable mentions, Duck Season - Buy from Amazon and Friends with Money - Buy from Amazon. More...

Close Race on Per Theatre Chart Ends with no Real Winner

May 16th, 2006

No films topped $10,000 on the per theatre charts, but there were three films in a very close race at the top of the list. Stolen led the way with $8,829 in its single theatre, while Giuliani Time earned $8,661, also in just one theatre. Easily the widest release of the three was Sketches of Frank Gehry, which played in a grand total of 2 theatres and pulled in an average of $8,620. More...

Candy Just as Sweet the Second Time Around

April 25th, 2006

There were no new releases to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts this weekend, but there were two holdovers to manage that feat. Hard Candy repeated on the top of the per theatre chart despite falling 35% to $18,901, which is a steep drop-off for a limited release. Second place went to Sir! No, Sir!. That film, which had been playing in San Francisco and Oakland for the past two weeks, opened at the IFC Center earning $11,930 during its first weekend there. More...

Silence is Golden

April 24th, 2006

It was a mixed week with the total box office hitting just $110 million, down 9.0% from last week. On the other hand, that was up an impressive 17.4% from the same weekend last year and year-to-date 2006 is now leading 2005 by 4%. On an interesting side note, of the three new releases, the film that earned the worst reviews earned the best box office while the film that earned the of best reviews earned the weakest box office. Further proof that high quality is detrimental to a film's box office potential. More...

Per Theatre Chart is Sweet as Candy

April 18th, 2006

Hard Candy easily won the race on the per theatre charts, taking in nearly $60,000 in 2 theatres for an average of $29,025. Friends with Money slipped to second place with a still impressive $17,611 average in 42 theatres, which bodes well for Friday when it is scheduled to open in several hundred more theatres. The only other movie in the $10,000 club was the overall box office leader, Scary Movie 4, with $11,167. More...

Friends with More Money

April 11th, 2006

Friends with Money easily led the per theatre charts after earning nearly $600,000 in 28 theatres for an average of $21,048. It was the only film to top $10,000 on the per theatre charts, although last week's winner, Brick came awfully close with $9,490 in 21 theatres. More...

April 7th, 2006

It's a busy week for limited releases, with the number of films on this week's list hitting double-digits (and that doesn't count Kinky Boots, which has a sneak peak this Saturday). There are a few films that look poised for some measure of mainstream success, with Friends with Money leading the way. More...

Movie Website Updates for March 31 - April 6

April 6th, 2006

It's a much busier week this week including several sites that I found through e-mails. Thanks for the tips. (On a side note, if you sent me an e-mail regarding a movie site and I forgot it, please send it again. It was a big list this week and I'm almost positive one or two sites slipped between the cracks.) Unfortunately, while there are plenty of sites on this week's list, there's not a lot of top notch ones. The movie on this list that made me the most excited was The Simpsons Movie, and that one doesn't even have an official movie site, just the teaser trailer. More...

Movie Website Updates for January 27 - February 2

February 2nd, 2006

During the past week promotional websites for several movies were launched and some older ones added additional content. It was another slow week with nothing really grabbing my attention and nothing award-winning, (although there are a couple of sites that show promise). Hopefully some of the summer blockbusters will start launching flash sites so this slump can end. More...
