Motivation
[edit]Indian Railways (Q819425) issues numerical identifiers for its train services, usually one for each direction of travel. (The examples above are directions of the Agniveena Express (Q18109414) and Howrah Malda Town Intercity Express (via Rampurhat) (Q17055390) respectively.) This property is meant to hold older train numbers (qualified with start time (P580)/end time (P582) as appropriate) and the current five-digit numbers in use, since unlike with census codes there is greater continuity between the old and new train numbering schemes. - Comment – Does the property have to specifically tied to Indian Railways? All train services in Canada and the United States had – and passenger trains still do have – train numbers (usually one, two, or three digits). As you are not using an external identifier, could you not broaden the scope this with the use of issued by (P2378) as a required qualifier?
- @Iain Bell: There are a number of third-party formatter URL (P3303)s that could be added for this (and for Indian Railways station code (P5696), to the best of my knowledge), and with respect to this proposed property it is possible to identify APIs to obtain information that read directly from government sources (or at least I was able to do this fairly recently, for instance to obtain train schedules), but as far as I know there is no resource that is simultaneously official, amenable to a formatter URL of the sort generally found on Wikidata properties, and equipped with a usable web interface.
