Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, this gritty drama portrays life in the months and years that follow a zombie apocalypse. A group of survivors travel in search of safety and security, constantly on the move in search of a secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and they soon discover that the overwhelming fear of the survivors can be more deadly than the zombies walking among them. At times, the interpersonal conflicts present a greater threat to their continuing survival than the walkers that roam the country.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Blood-spattered, emotionally resonant, and white-knuckle intense, The Walking Dead puts an intelligent spin on the overcrowded zombie subgenre.

William Thomas Empire Magazine This adaptation of Robert Kirkman's comics scored monster ratings. It's easy to see why Rated: 4/5 Oct 31, 2017 Full Review Alan Sepinwall HitFix An ongoing nightmare requires ongoing viewers, and therefore a show that stays strong as it goes along, if not one that gets better and better over time, and I'm not sold that The Walking Dead is that kind of show. Oct 31, 2010 Full Review Verne Gay Newsday The Walking Dead is a good, old-fashioned horror-genre flick/series, without pretension or - for that matter - much of a message, either. Rated: B Oct 31, 2010 Full Review A.S. Hamrah The Baffler The show is so much better than any of the recent non-Romero zombie movies that it's among the leading exhibits in the case against the cineplex. Sep 17, 2020 Full Review Steve Newton earofnewt.com I'm totally psyched to watch the second episode and see what the sheriff will do now that he's barricaded himself in that army tank to escape the 200 or so zombies who devoured his horse. Rated: 4/5 Apr 30, 2020 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media Overall, The Walking Dead's first season is a collection of weak storylines... and action pieces, surrounded by poorly written expositions and reveals. Chris B By far, this is my favorite series of the walking dead and to this date I have watched this entire series at least 8 times since it came out. This is by far the best zombie series I personally have ever seen. The zombies have a Romero type slow-walking zombie, but they can still catch you off guard or by the massive numbers. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/12/24 Full Review Jakey B After two of the best opening episodes to any Tv series, makes The Walking Dead an immediate hook, this short first season was a near perfect introduction to this post-Apocalyptic world and characters that focuses more on its moral conflicts than zombie horror, but still has that in spades. A really well paced season with enough drama and tension but doesn't drag. 9.5/10 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 06/03/24 Full Review Big R the best yessssss best ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/18/24 Full Review Audience Member Great season and great start to the series. It is filled with crazy good actors who have awesome chemistry with each other. I really like shane and rick's dynamic in particular. The constant moral dilemmas that are being thrown in our faces is incredible, especially since the different choices that are being made/suggested are always very understandable from eitehr sides. I find it great that we are living through rick's pov, being completely clueless on what has happend to the world after him being sent to the hospital. This way the audience can connect to the main character even more, especially since he always has good intentions. The love triangle between shane, rick and lori does suck in a way as it harms the friendship and brotherhood between shane and rick but it is also nice to see how they'd act in such a situation, who they'd prioritize, and what happens next. Will they stay loyal to each other or are they about to break? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Benjamin H The Walking Dead: Season 1 is sometimes empty and drifty, but as a whole it is still a nicely directed and acted introduction to this world that has gripping moments of intensity surrounding some commendable character building. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/28/24 Full Review Audience Member Brilliant season of television! This show is fantastic! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Read all reviews
