Carmen Rios Autostraddle Charming, enveloping, seriously funny, and beautiful. Jun 10, 2021 Full Review Nick James Sight & Sound Moonrise Kingdom makes a winning appeal to the precious joys of the pre-teen imagination circa 1965. Aug 30, 2017 Full Review David Thomson The New Republic The film is frequently funny, always elegant (or mock-elegant), and something that would make Humbert Humbert laugh all the way to his asylum. Jun 17, 2013 Full Review Chase Hutchinson The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Wes Anderson often gets (unfairly) pigeonholed as a one-note whimsy machine, but he proves he is so much more in the brilliant Moonrise Kingdom, where we see his habitual sweetness offset with somberness. Elijh P This movie was a very interesting watch, even though it was weird it made me wanna keep watching to see what else bazar was gonna happen. The adults acted like children, while the children seemed somewhat mature which I thought was an interesting add. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/17/24 Full Review Rare T This is a love story (and that is a merit in its own) but also more than just that. There’s drama, adventure, action, comedy, romance… You actually delve into the plot with the characters, each from their respective perspectives, personalities, and affiliations, and it’s all very beautifully filmed; exactly what you’d expect from a Wes Anderson picture. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/13/24 Full Review I C I really enjoyed the bizarre world Anderson created in Moonrise Kingdom: the tall treehouse, the isolated islands, the large presence of the Khaki Scouts. The very warm and saturated color palette gives the film a nostalgic feeling helps separate the good—Suzy, Sam, etc.—from the bad—Social Services—who wear cool tones. I also liked the full circle ending and how it enhanced the film by portraying how Sam and Suzy had been changed by their adventure through similar shots and symmetry. Overall, an amazing film with fun characters and a pleasing aesthetic. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review M A I enjoyed Moonrise kingdom more than I anticipated I would. From the bright colors, to the interesting storyline that was filled with humor and emotion, to the cinematography, I would now recommend this movie to anyone. I enjoyed watching Sam and Suzy embark on their adventure through the islands, which was whimsical and kept me on my toes. I also liked how the movie addressed the troubles of growing up and learning about what it means to be an adult, and showed the contrast between how the children were acting, versus the adults. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Lauren K Moonrise Kingdom is an excellent movie that is not only visually beautiful but very enjoyable story-wise. Sam and Suzy were a delight to me the whole movie, despite their looser morals, and I really cheered for them the whole time. Something I was interested in for the entire duration of the movie was the repetition of mature children and immature adults, which gave a very interesting insight into maturity as a whole. I’m not the most familiar with Wes Anderson’s work, but I could easily recognize his unique directing style. The consistent use of pan shots was able to create unique shots and give multiple perspectives in a shot without needing a cut. The yellow and orange color palette was something I also loved, and I seriously adored seeing how this created symbolism and contrast with cool blues when they were used. (especially at the end of the movie.) (I’m a sucker for color-related symbolism.) I have so many thoughts on this movie that it’s hard to list them all. Just go see the movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Alexander S Satire on relationships, childhood innocence, and reaction to trauma. It may not answer: “Can teenagers fall in love?” which is ok. Moonrise Kingdom film perfectly highlights the nuances of that question with both heartfelt and depressive scenes. As always, the way Wes Anderson uses camera cuts to direct the audience to a certain theme is excellent. Perfect watch for all ages. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Read all reviews
