Is Team Sussex losing allies to Team Windsor? How Harry and Meghan's pals are defecting to support The Firm - as the Montecito couple's favourite chef begins working with William's Earthshot Prize

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share many common friends and connections with the Prince and Princess of Wales - as well as King Charles and Queen Camilla - despite their ongoing rift.

While Harry and Meghan moved to Montecito, California after stepping down as senior royals, they have continued to be linked to their A-lister pals.

However, many - including Idris Elba, Edward Enninful and Stella McCartney - have opted not to choose sides, and continue enjoying warm relationships with both Harry as well as his family members back in the UK.

Meanwhile, even one of the Duke's closest pals, Nacho Figueras, has still maintained connections to the Windsors via his friendship with Mike and Zara Tindall.

Elsewhere, celebrities like George and Amal Clooney, who were present at the Sussexes' wedding, still seemingly show support for King Charles' charity endeavours.

Here, FEMAIL looks at the camp of in-betweeners floating between the two groups amid the oceanic family divide...

CHEF JOSE ANDRES

One of the newest recruits at William's Earthshot Prize Council has worked with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for years before his latest move.

José Andrés, a US-based restauranteur and celebrated humanitarian, will join the Prince of Wales's organisation's team of high-profile advisors and influencers, who will chose the five winners of this years high-profile awards designed to scale up some of the most innovative solutions to the global environmental crisis.

Andrés has also teamed up since 2020 with Harry and Meghan through his World Central Kitchen project, which provides food relief in crisis zones around the world, including building a community relief centre in India during the Covid crisis.

World Central Kitchen (WCK) previously described its work with their Archewell non-profit foundation as an 'ongoing philanthropic partnership'. Archewell also highlighted their 'shared mission to support 'more compassionate, strong and healthy communities'.

The chef enjoyed such a close relationship with the Sussexes that Meghan donated her 'signature' recipe for lemon oil cake to Andrés' charity cookbook early last year.

In 2021 Meghan also sent a cake made with lemons from the gardens of her Montecito mansion to a WCK project in Chicago.

And in an interview the following year, the chef waxed lyrical about his 'friends', telling People magazine: 'I love them.' He added that he had personally spent time working with the couple.

Now, however, he has thrown his weight behind Prince William's passion project, which already boasts Sir David Attenborough amongst its supporters.

It is not clear whether he is still working with Archewell and there was no immediate comment from WCK to confirm at the time of asking.

The chef is one of three 'influential' environment champions to be nominated to the Earthshot Prize Council and will join the future king and Sir David in choosing this year's winners, who will each be awarded £1 million prize money to help expand their work.

In a statement he said: 'I am thrilled to join the Earthshot Prize Council to help showcase the changemakers pushing the boundaries of innovation and ingenuity around the world.

'In good times and hard times, I've seen firsthand the power of food to heal and unite communities. Food is the best way to address some of the planet's most pressing challenges, and I firmly believe that we must transform our food systems to be more sustainable and equitable.

'There is so much we can do to inspire the world to see food as a powerful tool for creativity and change, and Earthshot solutions are at the forefront of this movement.'

STELLA MCCARTNEY

Renowned designer Stella McCartney - as well as being the daughter of music royalty Sir Paul McCartney - has worked on projects with both the Sussex and Wales camps.

In 2018, the British style legend landed the commission to create the Duchess of Sussex's £60,000 evening gown for her wedding day.

Stella has also said in past that the pair became good friends since Meghan began wearing her clothes following her engagement to Prince Harry.

Speaking to Elle magazine six years ago, she said: 'I think Meghan chose me for reasons other than just a beautiful dress – plenty of people can do that. She is not a difficult client to make look beautiful.'

She also says she believes that Meghan - along with her guests Amal Clooney and Oprah Winfrey - chose her designs because she is a strong feminist and environmental campaigner.

The designer, a lifelong vegetarian and animal rights campaigner, says she bonded with Meghan from the moment they met over their shared interest in environmental issues and the pair had since become friends.

The Duchess had also opted to wear a Stella McCartney dress for the late Queen's funeral in 2022.

The fashion designer's looks have also often been a favourite of his wife, the Princess of Wales.

At the Platinum Jubilee two years ago, Kate Middleton cut an elegant figure in a pink custom from the label when gathering outside Buckingham Palace in the royal box.

Seated next to her children, Kate appeared effortlessly stylish in the long-sleeve dress, which featured cinched waist detailing and a flared skirt, for the last of the celebrations. She has also often reworn pieces from Stella McCartney.

Stella also still has a warm relationship with King and Queen Camilla - and last year, received a CBE at Windsor Castle.

She was presented with the honour by King Charles with Skunk Anansie singer Deborah Dyer, best known by her stage name Skin, also among those receiving honours. The designer had previously received an OBE for services to fashion.

JACINDA ARDERN

Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, has been a long-time admirer of the Prince and Princess of Wales - and last year revealed that she is joining the board of Prince William's beloved Earthshot Prize, months after she publicly distanced herself from her inclusion in Meghan and Harry's Netflix 'docuseries'.

In an Instagram post, Earthshot praised the once-popular politician's 'life-long commitment to sustainable development and climate action'.

In turn, Jacinda, who last year resigned after saying she no longer had 'enough in the tank', praised the organisation for its 'power to encourage and spread not only the innovation we desperately need, but also optimism'.

The political figure also appeared to distance herself from William's brother Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle in late 2022.

She decided to issue a statement after she was featured in the Netflix Live To Lead 'docuseries', presented by the Sussexes, raising eyebrows after insisting she was unaware of their involvement when she agreed to take part in the programme, a celebration of 'inspirational leaders' in history.

In a statement on Earthshot's website, Prince William expressed his delight at the appointment.

He said: 'It is an honour to welcome Jacinda to The Earthshot Prize team.

'Her life-long commitment to supporting sustainable and environmental solutions, along with her experience as Prime Minister of New Zealand, will bring a rich infusion of new thinking to our mission.

'Four years ago, before The Earthshot Prize even had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice was crucial to the Prize's early success.

'I am hugely grateful to her for joining us as she takes the next steps in her career.'

It was not the first time that Jacinda appeared to have been friendly with the Prince and Princess of Wales, as the couple were amongst those who thanked the politician for her support while leading the Commonwealth nation, particularly following the death of Queen Elizabeth.

Prince William, his wife and Jacinda have met several times since she took office in 2017.

At the end of 2022, she issued a statement about her appearance in a Netflix 'docuseries' presented by Meghan and Harry, insisting she was unaware of the couple's involvement when she agreed to take part.

Live To Lead was made by New Zealand-based production company Blackwell & Ruth in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Sussexes' production company Archewell.

While the couple are listed as executive producers, Jacinda's office released a statement in response to journalists' questions that made it clear her involvement had nothing to do with the Duke and Duchess.

Previous to that, the Duchess of Sussex and the New Zealand premier appeared to have a budding friendship, sparked during their New Zealand Royal tour in 2018

Meghan was pregnant at the time of the tour and Jacinda later spoke of how she had been impressed by her stamina.

She said that year: 'Pregnancy is an often tiring time, but the way she gave everything her all was incredible. She's an amazing woman and I'm so glad to have gotten to know her.'

Meanwhile, a biography of the Sussexes, Finding Freedom, claimed that Jacinda sent a floral arrangement to Meghan after the birth of her son Archie.

She was also one of the fifteen women selected by the Duchess to be on the Vogue cover she guest edited in September 2019.

NACHO FIGUERAS

Prince Harry may have been feuding with Prince William over the last few years - but there is one close friend who appears to have filled the hole his brother left in his life.

Ignacio 'Nacho' Figueras, 47, from Argentina, was one of the first people to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's son Archie in 2019 and has become a vocal supporter of the royal couple in recent years.

The father-of-four plays polo with Prince Harry every year during his annual Sentebale match and has previously said he would 'defend his friends' with his life during an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show in September 2019.

Earlier this year, Nacho and Harry looked as chummy as ever at the Duke's annual charity polo match, which took place at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in April.

Speaking to Hello! following their most recent match, Nacho said of his close friend: 'It was always Harry's dream and passion to share with the world, what it takes to be a really competitive polo player and show polo at the highest level.

'I cannot think of many people that can be better than him to be the kickoff of this storytelling.'

The pair travelled to Tokyo together in August 2023 as part of their ongoing work with Sentebale and playfully posed for a photo wearing aviator sunglasses. Nacho captioned the Instagram post: 'Shopping for our wives!'

Harry and Nacho have long enjoyed a playful relationship - and the Duke was pictured playfully spitting a mouthful of champagne at the polo player following a charity polo match in the noughties.

Nacho - who has been dubbed the 'David Beckham of Polo' - was also among a handful of the Duke and Duchess's closest confidantes who appeared in the couple's Netflix documentary in 2022.

However, it would seem the friend is still brushing shoulders with the Windsor camp, appearing in high spirits as he earlier this year competed against Zara Tindall in a game of polo.

The daughter of Princess Anne matched up against Prince Harry's pal Nacho Figueras's - at the outing at Doug Jennings Park on the Gold Coast in Australia.

The pair were also seen enjoying a fun chat and laughing along with one another.

It's believed Zara and Harry both met Nacho through their shared love of all things equestrian.

Both Nacho, his wife Delfina and Zara are ambassadors for Magic Millions, with them all travelling to Australia every January for the event.

Nacho and Delfina were first pictured with Zara and Mike in January 2019, and the two couples appeared to hit it off, reuniting almost a year later to ring in 2020  with Aussie A-lister Rebel Wilson while overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Meanwhile, Harry and Nacho are also believed to have met playing polo, with the pair now playing together in Santa Barbara.

DUKE OF WESTMINSTER

It was earlier this year rumoured that Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, has decided not to invite Harry and Meghan to his society wedding to avoid 'drama'.

One of Prince Harry's closest friends and godfather to his son Archie, he is believed to have been keen to invite the Sussexes before deciding not to so his nuptials wouldn't be overshadowed by royal tensions.

The Prince of Wales was present at the event - solo - beaming as his close friend tied the knot.

Known as Hughie to this friends, the billionaire Duke is also godfather to William's son Prince George and Archie.

A life-long friend for each of the brothers, he is thought to be the only pal both chose to mentor their children.

'It's incredibly sad it has come to this,' a friend of William and Harry's told The Sunday Times.

'Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry's who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it's unlikely to happen before the wedding.'

'He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn't want any awkwardness.'

A spokesman for the Duke at the time said: 'We are not in a position to comment on the guest list.' Buckingham Palace also declined to comment.

A source also told PEOPLE that Harry's absence was 'an understanding between the two friends' and was a 'mutual' decision. According to the outlet, the Prince sent 'his love and support and admiration for the couple' ahead of their big day.

RITA ORA

Last year, Prince Harry's close friend Rita Ora performed at the closing ceremony of his 2023 Invictus Games.

The Invictus Games are a multi-sport tournament for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, both serving and veterans.

Harry played an instrumental role in bringing the Games to the UK in 2014 when 300 competitors from 13 countries took part in the inaugural competition in London.

Rita and Harry have been friends for years, with the popstar attending Harry's wedding in 2018.

In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Tonight she gushed that he was the 'cool, fun prince', adding that she and her friends had grown up wanting to 'hang out' with Prince Harry.

'It's in our culture, it's like Prince Harry is untouchable,' she continued. 'You know, it's a real thing.

Rita has also previously performed at a 2019 concert for Harry's charity Sentebale.

As reported by the Express in 2019, she had also told Marie Claire: 'Every time we see each other, I'm always surprised how much he remembers about the other conversations we've had

'Because he must meet so many people. But he's a proper laugh, and he listens.'

However, it would seem singer Rita is keen to still keep close ties to the Windsor camp, and has attended Prince's Trust events in past years, suggesting a fondness for the King's charity work.

The relationship between pop princess Katy Perry, 39, and the Duchess of Sussex has had its ups and downs over the years - but it seems the pair are firm friends nowadays.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were spotted at a Katy Perry concert in Santa Barbara last year, with the Duchess dressing to impress in a stunning black sequinned dress.

However, it hasn't always been plain sailing between the famous women - as it has been previously reported that Meghan held a 'grudge' against Katy over a critical comment the singer made about her wedding dress.

During a promotional tour in the US for American Idol in May 2018, Perry joked to Entertainment Tonight she 'would've done one more fitting' in relation to the dress at St George's Chapel.

A source told the Daily Star in August 2022: 'Meghan is keenly aware of a comment that Katy Perry made in 2018 about her wedding dress and is notorious for holding a grudge.

'While the comment wasn't meant to be hurtful, Meghan felt under siege at that time and was overwhelmed by arguments with staff, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Thomas Markle.'

However, this did not stop Harry making friends with actor Orlando Bloom, who is Perry's fiancé, after the family moved to Montecito.

Speaking on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast to discuss his mental health struggles, Harry admitted that he regularly texts his new friend.

As Harry and Meghan boogied at Katy Perry's concert, it appeared they were definitely fans of the singer - but are not the only royals to have enjoyed her musical talents.

The singer also travelled to the UK in May last year, where she headlined King Charles's Coronation Concert alongside the likes of Lionel Richie and Take That.

She performed in front of 20,000 members of the public and invited guests at Windsor Castle including the King and Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales - but notably, Prince Harry was not present.

The previous day Katy attended Westminster Abbey where she was one of the exclusive 2,200 guests at the King's Coronation.

Following the Coronation events, Katy took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes detail in her concert dress which suggested she's a fan of the monarch.

Inside the corset of the dazzling gold Vivienne Westwood gown, the words 'Katy Perry, Charles III, 2023' had been sewn into the material.

George and Amal Clooney were among the two most famous non-royals to attend Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018 and were given prime seats in St George's Chapel.

After the marriage they were said to have become closer and Amal was even invited to Meghan's baby shower in New York in 2019.

The Clooneys hosted Harry and Meghan at least twice at their home in Sonning, Berkshire, according to the Sussexes' biography Finding Freedom.

The book also claimed that the Clooneys invited the Sussexes to Lake Como only weeks after their wedding, flying them out on their private jet.

Finding Freedom co-author Omid Scobie also told Good Morning America that Harry and Mr Clooney had bonded over a love of motorcycles and basketball.

Asked by the Daily Mail in 2019 how he knew the couple, Mr Clooney said: 'I've just known them. We live not too far from one another and we have dinners and stuff and we're friends with them for all the reasons that you're friends with anybody.

'They're just really nice, fun, kind people, they're a very loving couple, and they're going to be great parents.'

But the Clooneys have not taken sides in the transatlantic row between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family, and turned out in support of King Charles III at a Prince's Trust event in London in May 2023.

The Beckhams were also among the Sussexes' exclusive wedding guest list when they tied the knot at St George's Chapel in Windsor in 2018.

Meghan is thought to have struck up a friendship with fashion designer Victoria in 2017 when she first moved to the UK and was living in Frogmore Cottage.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the couples bonded because Izzy May, David Beckham's communications director, was friends with Markus Anderson, chief membership officer for private social club Soho House, who helped arrange Meghan's secret dates with Harry.

The Beckhams also hosted Meghan in their six-bedroom house in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles before her marriage to Harry.

As relations appear to have cooled somewhat between the Sussexes and the Beckhams, footballing legend David was last year said to be discussing future charity collaborations with the King. Both pictured in May 2023

By the time that Meghan and Prince Harry became engaged, she and Victoria were said to have 'grown close' and would 'regularly text', according to royal biographer Tom Bower.

Meghan also gave the designer her seal of approval by selecting a cashmere knit for one of her engagement portraits with Harry.

When the royal couple moved to the US in 2022, David Beckham praised his 'amazing' friend Harry - but revealed he hadn't spoken to the Duke about his decision to step down as a senior royal and move to the US.

He told ET: 'We love him and he's an amazing person - and that's the most important thing - but I'm proud to see him growing up as an individual and being that person that every father wants to be.'

But last year, it was claimed the royal couple had a suspicion that the Beckhams leaked stories about Meghan's help from Victoria to the press - a claim the former Spice Girl denied and left David reportedly feeling 'absolutely bloody furious'.

A source close to the Beckhams told the Mail on Sunday: 'David and Victoria went to Meghan and Harry's wedding and were very supportive when Meghan arrived in the UK.'

But the accusations, which The Mail on Sunday had been told came in a tense phone call, appear to have fractured the Beckham friendship.

The source added: 'Any making up now is so unlikely.'

In contrast, it was reported in 2023 that the Man Utd legend accepted a dinner invitation from King Charles, after his relationship with the Sussexes appeared to have cooled.

The former England star was reportedly dining with Charles to talk about the possibility of him becoming an ambassador for The Prince's Foundation, a charity founded by the King in order to help provide skills to young people.

David has previously held a similar role representing Invictus Games, the multi-sport competition for sick and injured servicemen and women founded by Prince Harry in 2014.

Elsewhere, David and William are understood to have had a good relationships since England's World Cup bid in 2010. Last year, the footballer flew from Qatar to Boston during the World Cup to help William and Kate with their philanthropic efforts.

American media highlighted the moment David kissed Kate on the cheek as she hosted the Earthshot prize ceremony alongside her husband.

The now Prince and Princess of Wales' ceremony, which was attended by President Joe Biden, seemingly upstaged an event hosted by the Sussexes in New York that same weekend.

Earlier this summer, David also made an appearance in an Instagram video for Team GB, made by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Not only was Idris Elba a guest at Harry and Meghan's wedding in May 2018 - he was also a DJ at their reception

The lauded British actor is best known for his roles in Luther and The Wire - but Idris Elba is also a talented DJ and performed at Harry and Meghan's wedding, where he was also a guest.

The actor, who hails from Canning Town in East London, was spotted among the exclusive wedding guests at St George's Chapel in Windsor with his glamorous wife, Sabrina.

However, in the Sussexes' tell-all Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, the couple shared behind-the-scenes snaps of Idris behind the DJ decks.

Last year, in an interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Idris revealed he played Still by rapper Dr Dre, which he joked 'went off' with the crowd.

The actor explained that 'it was Megan's choice' to play the song, after taking to the decks for the royal occasion.

However, despite being a friend to the Sussexes, Idris has maintained ties with King Charles despite the royal couple's rift with Harry's father and other family members. Both pictured together in July

He has also revealed the Duchess busted the most impressive moves on the dancefloor last night, telling ET Canada: 'I think Meghan was the one that was really like letting it go.

'You know, she was real… She just had a lot of fun. It was her wedding. So she had the greatest time.'

However, despite being a friend to the Sussexes, Idris has maintained ties with King Charles despite the royal couple's rift with Harry's father and other family members.

He is also a goodwill ambassador for the Prince's Trust, Charles's charity.

When he was starting out in acting, the Trust supported him with a £1,500 grand which helped him train with the National Youth Music Theatre.

Speaking in a video for The Prince's Trust, he revealed the grant 'gave me my start in my career'.

EDWARD ENNINFUL

Edward Enninful, the once editor of British Vogue, also has strong ties with the King's charity and was made global ambassador for the Prince's Trust Group in 2021.

Last year, he praised the King as 'charming', 'funny' and 'kind' as he penned the monarch's entry in 100 Most Influential People of 2023 list.

He added that the British monarchy 'isn't perfect' but that King Charles had the ability to 'evolve with the times' in spite of this.

Mr Enniful's links to the monarchy don't end with King Charles, as he also developed a friendship with the Duchess of Sussex when he collaborated with her on an issue of British Vogue in 2019

Writing the entry for the King, Edward said: 'He could've let his privilege shield him from the realities of our hardship in a time when these were not a cause célèbre. But he always met us with an open mind and a listening ear.'

Mr Enniful's links to the monarchy don't end with King Charles, as he also developed a friendship with the Duchess of Sussex when he collaborated with her on an issue of British Vogue in 2019.

The 'Forces for Change' issue put inspirational women including actresses Gemma Chan and Jane Fonda, and former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern on the front cover.

When it was published in the September, it was the fastest selling issue in the magazine's 104-year history, selling out in less than 10 days.

The following year, Edward spoke to Sky News about criticism Meghan received when she joined the royal family, arguing that he didn't believe it was solely down to racism.

Describing the Duchess as a 'brave woman', he said: 'Parts of it were probably racism, but it was more of an institution.'

He added that while criticism was 'harsh', he 'wouldn't just blame it on racism', saying: 'She walked into an institution and everyone expected her to know the rules. And I think sometimes it takes a minute to understand the rules.'

However he continued to say he believed the treatment of her was 'very unfair'.
