Critics are giving enthusiastic reviews to Berkeley Playhouse’s production of The Prom, playing through Oct. 13.

The Prom playing through Oct. 13, at Berkeley Playhouse, 2640 College Ave., Berkeley. Fridays-Sundays, and select weekdays. Tickets $19-$55 with group discounts at Berkeleyplayhouse.org or (510) 845-8542 ext. 351.

Set in the fictional town of Edgewater, Indiana, The Prom follows a high school student (Arri Toshiko Glenn) trying to bring her girlfriend (Aleshani Altan) to the prom.  Four Broadway stars (Taylor Bartolucci, DC Scarpelli, Mary Kalita and Jaron Vesely) decamp to the conservative community and add drama to the drama.

Kelly Rogers Flynt, of BroadwayWorld, wrote, “The Prom at Berkeley Playhouse sparkles with energy, sequins, and high-octane choreography…Come for the dancing, and stay for the story. And just like in high school, The Prom is a night you won’t forget… With humor and heart, and a few downright ‘wow’ moments, The Prom is a good time that will leave you with a smile.”

Through a combination of hilarious and flashy numbers like “The Acceptance Song,” “It’s Not About Me,” and “Love Thy Neighbor,” and poignant and inspiring songs like “Unruly Heart” and “We Look to You,” the town and its visitors begin to see things differently and become more open to change.

Victor Cordell, of Cordellreportsdotcom, wrote, “…the Berkeley Playhouse production of The Prom is scintillating, heartfelt, and ultimately uplifting…the show hits on all cylinders.”

Berkeley Playhouse’s production is co-directed and co-choreographed by Christina Lazo and Megan McGrath. Music is directed by Daniel Alley. The artistic team leads an impressive ensemble of veteran actors and Berkeley Playhouse newcomers, as well as two casts of teens, who work seamlessly to bring this celebratory Broadway musical to life on the Julia Morgan stage.

“I absolutely adore this musical and have so enjoyed seeing our audiences’ and critics’ positive reactions to our production,” said Artistic Director Kimberly Dooley. “This show is hilarious and heartwarming and so important. It’s a celebration that everyone can be a part of.”
