A person died at the Downtown Berkeley BART station Wednesday evening, according to transit officials.

At about 5:46 p.m., a person within the yellow safety lines was hit as a train approached the station, said BART spokesperson Jim Allison. Statements from BART referred to the incident as a “major medical emergency,” a phrase the transit system uses to describe suicide attempts.

No other information about the person was provided late Wednesday.

Allison said that the Alameda County Coroner’s Office was on the scene.

The Downtown Berkeley station was closed after the collision, and service between the North Berkeley and MacArthur stops was shut down for part of the evening commute. Normal service later resumed and the Downtown Berkeley station reopened just after 9 p.m.
