Oreeginally settled bi East Polynesies, Norfolk Island wis colonised bi Great Britain as pairt o its dounset o Australie in 1788. The island served as a convict penal dounset till Mey 1855, except for an 11-year hiatus atween 1814 an 1825, when it wis abandoned. In 1856 permanent ceevilian residence on the island began when it wis settled frae Pitcairn. In 1901, the island acame a pairt o the Commonweel o Australie which it haes remained till this day.
