Re: Global rename

[edit]

FWIW, a local block won't stop page moves from occurring through global rename, it intentionally bypasses all permission checks after we had issues with local AbuseFilters getting in the way. Legoktm (talk) 04:49, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Legoktm: Well today I learned. Now we are getting into hypotheticals since I doubt that global community would grant access to such a bit to someone that was recently (or actively) blocked on a project. I understand the ability to get around abuse filters but blocks? Don't you think that is a little much? Not that I think any global renamer would be blocked on a project but wouldn't that be like overriding the local community in a way? Even if it was just moving pages, getting around a block would probably raise questions and I doubt that little tidbit is well known. --Majora (talk) 21:53, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
It's more a technical issue; if renames were stopped on one project due to the block, it would defeat the purpose of global renaming and break SULs. That said, global renamers are expected to maintain the trust of the global community. If one was subject to local blocks, that would be a reason to review continued access to those permissions. – Ajraddatz (talk) 21:56, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply
Makes sense. Although I would assume the rename would still go through even if the userpage was not moved from the old name to the new. The new userpage would just stay a red link. It would break things but not as bad as breaking SUL. Assuming I understand something in which I have zero actual understanding of . --Majora (talk) 22:06, 30 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos

[edit]

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

You can find more information in the final report for the grant.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.

On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.

Regards,

Video tutorial regarding Wikipedia referencing with VisualEditor

[edit]

Hi, I have received a grant from WMF to support production of a video tutorial regarding creating references with VisualEditor. I anticipate that the video will be published in March 2019. If this tutorial is well received then I may produce additional tutorials in the future for English Wikipedia and possibly other projects such as Commons and Spanish Wikipedia. If you would like to receive notifications on your talk page when drafts and finished products from this project are ready for review, then please sign up for the project newsletter.

Goodbye, best wishes, and an open door

Hello Majora, I was sad to read your retirement comments on the Stewards' noticeboard. I enjoyed our conversations. I understand how a hobby can become too much. You are welcome to email me if you would like to discuss anything. If you decide to return, even if only to talk with me, the door is open. I wish you well, and I hope that we will meet again, here or elsewhere. May the sun shine on your path. Regards, ↠Pine () 03:37, 28 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
