As a fan of real-time strategy games, I think it's time for me to make a army-type battle, instead of my usual one-on-one affairs. And for today, I will be pitting two great Asian protagonists of two of the most famous RTS games in gaming history. Nanib Sahir, the subedar who fought and defied the British during the Sepoy Mutiny, versus Nabeshima Mochizuru, the daimyo who resisted and conquered the Shogun during the Boshin War. WHO IS DEADLIEST?!

Subedar Nanib Sahir, a member of the Sepoy regiments who served the British East India Company, slowly became disillusioned by its cruel ways and abuse of Indian citizens. He initially fought under Colonel George Edwardson in regaining British control of the saltpetre trade in the Punjab. Nanib and Edwardson then marched south to Calcutta and defeated the roving bands of arsonists there. At the close of the battle, Nanib convinced a group of arsonists to lay down their weapons and leave, but Edwardson's men ambushed and massacred them, leaving Nanib visibly shaken.

The conflict of Nanib's loyalty came to a head when he and his men were ordered by the Colonel Edwardson to use new Enfield Rifles despite the cartridges' greasing with beef tallow and pork fat, which was a taboo to the sepoys' Hindu and Muslim beliefs. Nanib used one of the rifles to fire a near miss at Edwardson (loosely based on a similar incident involving Mangal Pandey), killing one of his soldiers. Nanib and fellow sepoy Pravar Patel then lead their regiment of sepoy against the British East India Company, capturing many areas, freeing Bahadur Shah II, and even killing Edwardson during an assault at his fort. He would then continue his fight against the Company as well as the British Empire as a whole.

• Sepoy: A heavy infantry of Indian origin. The Sepoys are armed with muzzle-loading 1853 Enfield Rifles and bayonets, making them an all-around unit to use against melee cavalry, range cavalry, and infantry. For this battle, Sahir will have 500 sepoys at his disposal.
• Sowar: A melee heavy cavalry unique to the Indians. They are armed with a long thin spear from atop a camel. They are good against light infantry and skirmishers but are weak against heavy infantry and some cavalries. For this battle, Sahir will have 300 sowars at his disposal.
• Howdah: An Indian is a ranged light cavalry consisting of a gunner, armed with an 1853 Enfield Rifle, on top of a "howdah" platform that is being carried by an elephant. They have two types of attacks, where they can either shoot their enemies, or use the elephant to swing or trample many of them. For this battle, Sahir will have 50 howdahs at his disposal.
• Zamburak: A type of mobile artillery consisting of a rider and a camel with a muzzle-loading culverin or falconet on its back. The zamburak riders would ride into battle, dismount, and fire their cannons at their enemies. For this battle, Sahir will have 50 zamburaks at his disposal.

During the Boshin War, when much of Japan was embroiled in fighting between those who supported the military dictatorship known as the Shogun, and the more rightful rulers of the Imperial Court, the Saga domain was ruled by Nabeshima Mochizuru, the latest in a line of daimyo who were given this territory after the Tokugawa won the vicious civil war of the Sengoku Jidai. Nabeshima Mochizuru is one of the playable historical characters in the Total War: Shogun series.

Mochizuru sided with the Imperialists and led his armies in fighting Shogunate forces in the South. His domain included the port of Nagasaki, a valuable resource for any daimyo. It was here where Japan had its only official trade with the West and where interesting ideas arrived in the country. The knowledge of the harshness of the outside world probably convinced Mochizuru to throw his weight behind the Imperial Court rather than the Shogun. His clan had several advantages during the struggle: they have Western connections and trade that was far ahead of any other domain. In turn, this learning gave them better firearms, artillery, and numerous other advanced technology.

• Kihetai: A common mix of line and elite Japanese infantry. They are armed with breech-loaded Snider-Enfield Rifles and a katana. They are good range units but not particularly good in melee and cavalry. For this battle, Nabeshima will have 500 kihetai at his disposal.
• Saber Cavalry: A type of Japanese melee cavalry that are armed with cavalry sabers, as opposed to a katana, for charge and close quarters. They are armed with mass-produced and mass-shipped factory sabers of German and English origins. For this battle, Nabeshima will have 300 saber cavalrymen at his disposal.
• Bow Ki: A traditional range cavalry composed of a horseman armed with a yumi bow. They are good skirmishers and can fire over a hill or while charging. However, they are horrible at melee. For this battle, Nabeshima will have 100 bow ki at his disposal.
• Parrot Gun: A type of Japanese artillery armed with a muzzle-loading parrot guns, which are extremely useful for long range bombardments. They are moved around the battlefield with the use of its wheels, and they are vulnerable in melee and cavalry combat. For this battle, Nabeshima will have 20 parrot guns at his disposal.

• Training
  • Nanib Sahir is a sepoy with a rank of subedar. Although not the best, sepoys were still highly trained men drilled in European combat. Nabeshima Mochizuru came from a long line of daimyo and samurai, and as such, are trained in Japanese warfare, with also some learnings about European warfare.

• Experience
  • Nanib Sahir initially fought for the British East India Company against fellow Indians in the Punjab frontier, but later on fought against the British during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Nabeshima Mochizuru's military career span the Boshin War of 1868-1869 against the Shogun Forces, mainly the island faction of Tsushima-Fuchu and other smaller provinces.
