Talk:Bayou St. John

Latest comment: 12 years ago by Leroy e. brown in topic Former extensions of Bayou St. John

I'm not so sure about the picture caption in the article. The egrets are barely visible, and it is houses across the bayou that figure most prominently in the picture. Should we choose another caption? Nolabob (talk) 00:10, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not only fine about recaptioning the image, perhaps we should use a different image? I put up that photo in the first version of the article -- looking at the full size you can see the post-Katrina trashpiles and dead refrigerators outside the houses. I think we probably have at least a couple of good alternative photos on Commons now. Anyone have any preferences or thoughts? -- Infrogmation (talk) 02:33, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

A few possible pics:

There are probably a few other decent choices. -- Infrogmation (talk) 02:40, 24 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I like the second image in the above gallery. It gives a truer sense of this body of water actually being a bayou. Nolabob (talk) 01:20, 26 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fine by me; it is a nice photo. Of course the WPA putting concrete abutments along the Bayou have the effect of making it a bit less "natural". -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:19, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Former extensions of Bayou St. John

edit

By any chance, does anyone have an picture or know where I can get a picture of the Bayou as it has been described as having had water flow close to Lee Circle? I am finding trouble finding references for the old water topography of the Bayou prior to it becoming its current state. I would like to be able to document the history of it's deterioration however natural or artificial. Leroy E. Brown (talk) 23:46, 2 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Check out various maps from the Colonial era and early 19th century in Commons:Category:Old maps of New Orleans. The bayou many more tributaries, some of which were seasonal and often shifting, before the area was developed. -- Infrogmation (talk) 16:19, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!! I am also going to head to the library and see what I can dig up. The development sort of saddens me. In any case, once again, I appreciate your help. Leroy E. Brown (talk) 18:45, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

It seems that what I am referring to is the New Basin Canal? Leroy E. Brown (talk) 06:54, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
