La Zandunga (also spelled as La Sandunga) is a traditional Mexican song performed in the city of Tehuantepec in Mexico with lyrics written by Máximo Ramó Ortiz in 1853 after his mother passed away. In Disney media, it is featured in the 1944 animated Disney film, The Three Caballeros. The song is entirely sung in Spanish.

Background[]

In "The Three Caballeros", it is played during the Donald's Surreal Reverie segment where Donald Duck finds himself in a hallucination where he encounters Mexican actress Carmen Molina dancing along with a couple of animated flowers where Donald gets attracted to her. The song ends when it loops into "Jesusita en Chihuahua" where Donald meets Molina in a charro outfit again dancing with a group of animated cacti. While the song is mostly instrumental, the vocals can be heard throughout the song twice.

Lyrics[]

Chorus: Ay, Zandunga
Zandunga, mamá por Dios (Zandunga, mother, please)
Zandunga, no seas ingrata, (Zandunga, don't be ungrateful)
Mamá de mi corazón (Mother of my heart)

(with Donald Duck joining in) Ay, Zandunga
Zandunga, mamá por Dios
Zandunga, no seas ingrata,
Mamá de mi corazón

(continued instrumental verse then cue into "Jesusita en Chihuahua")

Trivia[]

  • "Zandunga" is a rarely used word in Spanish language, which could translate as gracefulness, elegance, or celebration.
  • The song can be heard in one scene in the 2017 Pixar film, Coco.
