Help with renaming a few .PNG and .SVG map files on Wikimedia Commons

[edit]

Good evening! Thank you so much for your help with moving and changing file names for a couple of swing state map files earlier today.

I'm wondering if you could kindly take a look at each of File:Swing states 2016.svg  ; File:Swingstate2020.png  ; File:Swing states.png and do the same for those as well? With regard to the subcategory of swing-state maps, it would represent a massive help with finally streamlining the disparate file names of each map in the group.

If you're currently busy or don't have much time, though, feel free to ignore this request. I'm sure another editor will eventually come along and sort everything out anyway. Thank you so much and take care!

Best regards, A Red Cherry (talk) 02:15, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@A Red Cherry: Those three have been renamed as well, now. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 02:23, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! Your help is greatly appreciated :)
A Red Cherry (talk) 02:27, 5 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good afternoon! Would you be so kind as to do the same with file:swing state map.svg and file:US CPVI after 2016.svg too? Thank you so much for all your help!
A Red Cherry (talk) 19:55, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
With regard to the former file, I made this request with the aim of reducing confusion, as the "map" terminology is redundant (any image of swing states will necessarily have to be a map).
More importantly, all the other "swing state" maps within the same category follow the same naming convention (year of election, followed by "swing states"). This is the same pattern I have followed with this renaming request, apart from leaving out the year, as this is the dynamic map that should be updated after each new electoral cycle.
Thank you for understanding and allowing me to lay out the reasoning for my request!
All the best,
A Red Cherry (talk) 20:06, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Good afternoon Nihonjoe! I'd really appreciate it if you could review my request to rename file:2020 swing state map.png as well. Thank you for all the help!
A Red Cherry (talk) 20:27, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! If you don't mind, could you take a quick look and do the same for file:2016 swing state map.png? Thanks again!
A Red Cherry (talk) 21:17, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@A Red Cherry: There isn't a rename request there. Please add a rename request. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 21:18, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that; I didn't realize that I failed to submit it earlier. I re-entered my request just now—could you please check the page and confirm that it went through? Once again, thank you very much! A Red Cherry (talk) 21:19, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

harmonize the names of a set of images

[edit]

really? what set is it and is "File:2008-02 Asuny 02.jpg" maybe an indicator that it is a harmonised set? ...Sicherlich talk 15:05, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

and if "harmonising" means english first for a picture of a polish church is might be some english centric bias ...Sicherlich talk 15:06, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sicherlich: If you have a problem with the new name, please contact the person who submitted the move request. I simply assumed good faith on the part of the submitter and processed the request. I don't have a preference as to which language a file name is in, so I can't speak to any perceived bias they might have. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 18:03, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"please contact the person": did so 2 days ago. Non responding, and even if so; he could not move it anyways
AGF: okay. In other words you have no idea. I thought the responsibility of file movers to check if the rules apply. ...Sicherlich talk 19:36, 3 September 2024 (UTC) I asume you have no idea what the set for this move you did, as well? Or this one? [reply]
@Sicherlich: We do check to see if the rules apply, but we don't do in-depth research on every single file rename request we handle. That would cause an insane backlog of tens of thousands of images. We assume the person requesting the change has done all that in-depth research. If we don't see anything that seems immediately problematic, then we AGF and do the move as requested. And no, most of the time the request doesn't include the general naming format for the harmonized set. Again, we assume good faith on the part of the requester, and 99% of the time that pans out.
Names like "File:2008-02 Asuny 02.jpg" don't really appear to be part of a harmonized set as they are super generic (in this case, "some picture #2 in Asuny taken in February 2008" is how I read the original name. Occasionally (and possibly with this one, based on your comments here), there may be a problem that wasn't immediately apparent. File names are not permanent, and sometimes files get renamed multiple times. We do the best we can, occasionally make mistakes, and keep on doing the best we can. If you disagree with the move and think a different name would work better, you're welcome to either move it directly (not sure if you can do that) or request that it be moved. ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 22:48, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sicherlich @Nihonjoe Regarding the question, I would like to explain that starting the name of a photo with a date means that when categorizing a set of other photos, the names with the date appear first, and only then with the location. This leads to chaos. For example, if we have 2024_Gayersburg, it appears before Angersburg. On the other hand, if we have Gayersburg_4, we first have a file with the date, then Angersburg and Gayersburg_4. Thanks to the correction of the name that I proposed, all photos from one location, and thus the object, will be next to each other. This makes it easier to compare and analyze them later. Generally, uploading names straight from the camera, which by default gives the date at the beginning is not beneficial when using sets in the category. I hope I explained it. Best regards Bornholm (talk) 08:40, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Bornholm thx for finally reacting;
your personal preferences how files are named don't matter. If there is the need to sort them in any way one can do so without the name beeing involved. And the needed sorting might be different in different categories.
Why geography first, not time? --> Category:Church of the Assumption in Asuny I see the pictures and know how old they are and they are sorted in that order. I find exactly what I need. Only with Asuny 02.jpg I have no idea if it was taken a year ago or 20. And what does the village name help here; its Church of the Assumption in Asuny - they are by definition in Asuny. And if not time why not the direction you look from: so "widok od północy - Cerkiew Asuny.jpg" - or maybe the part you see: "drzwi - Cerkiew Asuny.jpg"? ...
and if you want to know the rules read the moving rules again and maybe Commons:File naming as well: "Unless there is a compelling reason not to, the uploader's choice of name should be honored". Your reason 4 harmonize .. a set has a footnote. Read it and you'll see it does not apply. If you think they are wrong try to change the rules first. ...Sicherlich talk 15:36, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SicherlichThe rules are very simple and are related to the fact that photographs should be categorized according to clear criteria. We are a community that shares its photos not for the purpose of treating commons as a personal memento of the photos that were taken, but to be able to compare, for example: 1) the changes that have occurred in a given object over time; 2) to collect in one set the places in the photos that were taken by different people. If you took a photo on the date when another person took it, then you both took a photo on the same date and they will be placed next to each other, but your date as the initial name does not contribute anything. On the other hand, titling the photo with the place where the photo was taken provides much greater clarity, and the date is less important because it is visible based on EXIF data anyway. Bornholm (talk) 18:30, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bornholm and Sicherlich: Now that you're talking to each other, please take the discussion to the talk page of the image in question, or some other appropriate venue. Since I don't have a preference one way or the other, this is not the appropriate venue to determine a consensus for naming the file. Thanks! ···日本穣 Talk to Nihonjoe 16:57, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
