‘Young Woman And The Sea’
You’ll often hear people say “They don’t make ’em like they used to,” but in the case of Disney’s Young Woman And The Sea, they very much made this one EXACTLY like they used to. And that’s a good thing, especially for the oft-ignored “family film” genre. This movie, rated PG, tells the story of Gertrude Ederle (Daisy Ridley), one of the most popular and influential swimmers in history. She overcame a near fatal case of measles to win three medals at the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics, but most famously became the first woman to ever successfully swim the English Channel. This is very much a straight-forward sports biopic without much in the way of razzle dazzle, but what it lacks in flash is more than made up for by the power of the narrative it successfully tells.
