‘Working Girl’
Celebrate the 73rd birthday of the great Carly Simon by watching the movie that won her the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Working Girl was a huge hit in 1988, finishing 11th at the box office that year, racking up 6 Oscar nominations, and hitting the peak of Melanie Griffith’s acting career. You also had peak Harrison Ford ’80s Sex Icon era, and Sigourney Weaver being the most terrifying boss imaginable. Plus wigs on Griffith and Joan Cusack big enough to sink the Staten Island ferry. Also? Everybody is in this movie. Even if you’ve seen it, you forget it co-stars Alec Baldwin, Oliver Platt, Olympia Dukakis, Kevin Spacey, David Duchovny, Amy Aquino, Ricki Lake, Nora Dunn. It’s crazy. Once again, Mike Nichols works magic with a movie that in lesser hands could’ve been utter hack work. Climbing the corporate ladder in 1980s Manhattan has never looked so attractive. And then there’s Carly Simon, whose “Let the River Run” was a triumphant ’80s anthem for social change (women in the workplace! the new Jerusalem is here!) belted in Simon’s signature wail.
