‘The Tragedy Of Macbeth’
Despite the mesmerizing direction (by Joel Coen), minimalist aesthetic, and stark black and white cinematography, the real attraction here is the acting, led by Denzel Washington’s jaw-dropping performance in the title role. Washington’s Macbeth is never less than striking, delivering his lines with a hypnotic rhythm that builds in subtle intensity over the course of the film’s economic (1h 45m) runtime. While Alex Hassell’s Ross steals every scene he’s in, and Frances McDormand delivers an almost sympathetic Lady Macbeth, it’s Kathryn Hunter’s eerie, shape-shifting turn as the Witches that provides The Tragedy Of Macbeth‘s most jarring imagery.
