‘The Son’

Florian Zeller’s The Son will break your heart into a million little pieces. The emotional drama stars Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern and newcomer Zen McGrath as a struggling family battling a mental health crisis. Peter (Jackman) takes Nicholas (McGrath) in after his mother (Dern) expresses that his behavior is unmanageable. However, the father recently had a baby with his new wife and must divide his time appropriately. When he discovers that the situation is more complicated than imagined, things begin to unravel. The movie is a stark contrast to others that have tackle mental health, and examines its themes through a modern and nihilistic lens — refusing to sugar-coat it for the weak of heart. The story is heartbreaking and infuriating, but makes for a valuable watch.

‘Kinds of Kindness’

Director Yorgos Lanthimos followed his twisted—but ultimately sweet—Oscar-nominated film Poor Things with a film that is not very sweet at all, and I think that's beautiful. Kinds of Kindness, which is now streaming on Hulu, is an anthology film consisting of three shorts, all of which star Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret...

FX's The Old Man has always been a different kind of spy thriller, least of all because its ass-kicking action star is the 74-year-old Jeff Bridges. No, The Old Man flips the conventions of the drama by making the stakes personal. Once again, "Dan Chase" (Jeff Bridges), a retired elite CIA operative finds himself fighting not to save the world or...
