‘Smiley Face’
Anna Faris rose to fame in the early Aughts as the star of the Scary Movie franchise, earned some hipster cred with her acidic portrayal of Cameron Diaz in Lost In Translation, and seemed poised to be the stand-out comedic actress of her generation with her winning turns alongside Ryan Reynolds in both Waiting and Just Friends. So how did she use her clout? She teamed up with indie auteur Gregg Araki to make the 2007 stoner comedy Smiley Face, and we should all be thankful she did. The film follows Jane (Faris), an underemployed struggling actress, on a series of comic misadventures she undertakes after accidentally wolfing down a plate full of pot brownies. Faris has never been funnier, or more endearing, than she is here, delivering a virtuoso, tour-de-force performance that sits comfortably alongside Sean Penn’s Spicoli in the Stoner Hall of Fame. Happy 4/20, y’all!
