‘Shōgun’
FX’s newest drama, Shōgun, spirits viewers away to 1600 Japan, where the brilliant Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) has been betrayed by the four other regents of the realm. His life, land, and followers will all be forfeit if he can’t come up with a plan to route his enemies. The sudden arrival of English navigator John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) upsets the delicate political balance, making him a boon to Toranaga’s cause. Toranaga soon pairs Blackthorne with the Catholic Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), who is one of the few Japanese nobles fluent in the global language of the day, Portuguese. Shōgun is a beautiful, brutal gem of a show that celebrates Japanese culture with incredible writing and cinematic visuals. It’s a must-watch for fans of epic storytelling and great TV.
