‘Pushing Daisies’
Whenever I’m feeling down, I put on Pushing Daisies and instantly feel better. The short lived series from visionary creator Bryan Fuller stars Lee Pace as Ned, a pie-maker with a special ability: touch a dead body once, and he can bring it back to life; touch it again, and it dies forever. This causes some serious problems when he brings his childhood crush Chuck (Anna Friel) back to life, and they fall in love. Doomed to never touch, the two navigate complexly whimsical mysteries and surreal scenes with glee. And though Pace and Friel are glorious, the supporting cast is similarly superb. Chi McBride as a constantly fed up private investigator, Ellen Greene and Swoosie Kurtz as Ned’s quirky aunts, Jim Dale as the narrator, and most importantly Kristin Chenoweth as Olive Snook. Chenoweth was the break out of the series, tackling soaring musical numbers and lovelorn romance with equal aplomb. If you don’t believe me (and you should), watch the pilot episode of the show, which still stands as one of the most uniquely perfect hours of television ever created.
