‘Masters of the Air’
Masters of the Air is now the third epic miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and company that dives into the nitty-gritty of life for American servicemen on the front lines of World War II. The Apple TV+ series follows the 100th Bomb Group, a B-17 Flying Fortress unit in the Air Force tasked with bombing key German targets. Led by the cocksure John “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner), his heroic best friend Gale “Buck” Clevens, and aided by the likes of brilliant navigator Harry Crosby (Anthony Boyle), intrepid flyer Curtis Biddick (Barry Keoghan), and ground engineer extraordinaire Ken Lemmons (Rafferty Law), the 100th suffered immense losses, but eventually helped secure the Allies’s victory over the Third Reich. Masters of the Air may not have the elegant touch of the original Band of Brothers, but it makes sense that it plays more like an adrenaline-packed thrill ride. After all, these guys were the ones facing down flak and fighter pilots. Masters of the Air is a must-watch for any World War II fan (or devotee of Austin Butler).
