‘Madame Web’
Look. Is Madame Web a good movie? Of course not! But the fact remains that I had more fun watching this goofy Spider-Man adjacent movie in the theater than I’ve had watching any of the Marvel Studios movies in the last five years. Dakota Johnson’s much-mocked superhero flick—which is now available to buy or rent on digital platforms—has a bonkers plot that barely makes sense, and inexplicably takes place in the early 2000s. (That latter fact is only occasionally remembered by the filmmakers, with jarring references to American Idol or Beyoncé’s early work.) Yet Johnson’s dry, deadpan delivery worked perfectly with the film’s campy humor. The best parts involved Johnson as the reluctant babysitter of three teenage Charlie’s-Angels-in-training. What can I say? It’s just fun! Las arañas know what I’m talking about.
