‘Little Women’ (2017)
PBS’s sweet new adaptation of Little Women does little to reinvent Louisa May Alcott’s literary classic, but that’s kind of why it’s good. It’s still the same simple, loving story, once more told well. Though, this version does add some extra dimension to poor Beth’s woes: this version of the tale makes it clear that she was likely suffering from some kind of anxiety disorder that kept her hanging back while the other March girls trudged forward. The big story, though, is that this miniseries marks the debut of Maya Hawke. Sure, she’s Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke’s daughter, but she’s got a real fire that’s all her own. Watch out for her to lead a new generation of stars very soon.
