‘Kinds of Kindness’
Director Yorgos Lanthimos followed his twisted—but ultimately sweet—Oscar-nominated film Poor Things with a film that is not very sweet at all, and I think that’s beautiful. Kinds of Kindness, which is now streaming on Hulu, is an anthology film consisting of three shorts, all of which star Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, and Mamoudou Athie in different roles. Unlike Poor Things—an endorsement of the inherent goodness of humanity—Kinds of Kindness defies its title by spotlighting the selfish, paranoid, obscene underbelly of humanity, vis-à-vis sex cults, violent schizophrenia, and sex cults again. It likely won’t make the same impact as Poor Things, but Kinds of Kindness is definitely still worth a watch.
