‘Kevin Can F*** Himself’
Kevin Can F*** Himself takes the network sitcom model and turns it on its head. Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy plays Allison McRoberts, a Massachusetts native who, by all means, looks and acts like the typical sitcom wife we’ve come to know on network television. But the AMC drama offers an inside look at the life of this uncovered trope as it switches between the vivid, multi-camera setup of traditional sitcoms when she’s around her self-centered husband to the dark and tepid reality of her life. Allison is desperate to break free from her smothering marriage to Kevin McRoberts and will do whatever it takes to escape the life they’ve built in the small Massachusetts town of Worcester. Her married life mostly consists of her navigating Kevin’s antics. But the series reveals the dark reality of what being married to such a man is like. While Kevin is characterized as a man-child, which is typical for a sitcom husband, his outlandish decisions have high stakes consequences and impact – even if they are backed by a laughing audience. Their life may look like The King of Queens in Kevin’s eyes, but for Allison, it’s a prison.
