‘Greener Grass’
Greener Grass is the latest entry in the subgenre of films that riff on the dark side of suburbia. Part Blue Velvet, part Stepford Wives and part “Black Hole Sun,” the debut feature from Upright Citizen’s Brigade vets Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe focuses on the tense relationship between two women (played by DeBoer and Luebbe) who are simultaneously BFFs and rival antagonists. The movie embodies the UCB’s “Yes, and…” spirit of improv comedy, wherein literally anything can happen; to wit, one of the film’s major characters turns into a puppy at one point, and no one bats an eyelash. Originally released under the IFC Midnight banner, this trippy comedy has all the makings of a future cult classic.
