‘Fruitvale Station’
Anyone who saw Black Panther director Ryan Coogler’s searing breakthrough Fruitvale Station knew that he was destined to change cinema. The beautiful film gives us an intimate look at the last day in the life of Oscar Grant (played by Michael B. Jordan). In 2009, Grant was murdered by a white BART police officer at Fruitvale Station, but the majority of the film isn’t about that. It’s about the complex inner life of a man doomed to become a martyr and its about the vibrant life, full of love and pain, smashed by violence. It’s a testament to Coogler’s heart.
