‘Dear White People’
Netflix’s Dear White People takes Justin Simien’s 2014 film to new heights. The series, which was picked up for a fourth and final season in the fall, follows a group of Black students at Winchester University as they struggle to come to terms with the pervasive racism so often engrained in elite institutions. While Simien’s dramedy grounds itself in its characters, their relationships and conflicts are informed by the larger structures of racism and socioeconomic inequality, even within their own group. As the title suggests, Dear White People offers an essential lesson for white viewers about compassion, privilege, and anti-racist activism.
