A play-it-safe film, with its chaos a little too controlled. But Bell’s examination of the institution of marriage has it insights, and there are laughs.
Despite some clever writing (Widespread Panic jokes never go out of style), a game cast, and a funny critique of the ethics of documentary filmmaking, I Do … Until I Don’t never rises above the trite characters and well-worn scenarios it depicts. Best to get the annulment papers ready.
It’s baffling, more than anything, as to how all of this talent could create something so uncharacteristic to their collective abilities to make us laugh, or feel something.
An outrageously hilarious look at the sanctity of marriage, one that routinely skewers both the proponents and detractors of one of life's most revered and time-honored sacred cows. Despite a slight tendency to meander in the second hour, this consistently funny farce never disappoints, dependably serving up big, insightful laughs that handily push past barriers more timid comedies would never consider broaching, thanks in large part to Lake Bell's inspired, off-the-wall writing. Pay no heed to the naysayers who've slammed this one; seems like they wouldn't recognize good humor even if they tripped over it.
So good to see Paul Reiser on screen again! I hope to see him in many more films in the future, as he brings a seemingly effortless and easygoing humor to the part. Mary Steenburgen is lovely and a pleasure to watch, as always, as his wife. Lake Bell did a great job as writer/producer/director and co-star. Amber Heard is stunning. I didn't even realize it was her until I checked the credits at the end. And Ed Helms is always one of my favorites. Great cast, entertaining film.
