It’s been a good week for Basque directors Jon Garaño and Aitor Arregi, who, along with Jose Mari Goenaga, world premiered “Marco” at Venice and landed a spot on the shortlist for Spain’s Oscar entry.
Sold by Film Factory Entertainment, with market screenings in Toronto and upcoming stops at San Sebastian, London and Vancouver, “Marco” is generating significant buzz. Based on real events, it centers on Enric Marco, an imposter who gained sympathy, fame, and respect by falsely claiming to be a concentration camp survivor while serving as chairman of the leading Spanish association for deportees. His story was a lie.
The filmmakers initially aimed to capture Marco’s downfall as a documentary, but like everything he touched, truth slipped away. He told them he was going to Germany to get papers from a prison he’d stayed in. The filmmakers wanted to accompany and capture key footage.

We’re Here star Sasha Velour is starring in a new play at the La Jolla Playhouse.
Velour: A Drag Spectacular, described as a “sweeping, coming-of-age tale interwoven with the radical history of drag and queer expression,” is inspired by Velour’s own life.
In the latest season of We’re Here, the RuPaul’s Drag Race alum and her co-stars travel to Oklahoma and Tennessee to meet the local Lgbtqia+ community and put on drag shows. The show features the real stories of “ordinary people growing up queer in small town America” as Velour puts it. She also notes that is her own story.
“I try to focus on the glamour, and all the things that make me so unique in my mind, but truly I do have an ordinary story,” Velour tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s real power in that to help demystify, to bring people closer to these queer...

The Hives have returned with their sixth studio album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. Stream the record below.
Spanning 12 tracks and packing-in an impressive amount of Hives-esque angst, antics, and rock ‘n’ roll prowess, the album proves that just because the popularity of rock has waned in recent years doesn’t mean that one of the genre’s greatest purveyors has lost their touch. In fact, The Hives think there might even be a correlation: “I’m just saying that The Hives don’t release a record for 10 years, [and] rock becomes completely unpopular,” frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist told The New York Times. “Coincidence? We think not.”
Thankfully, The Hives weren’t alone in this endeavor. The making of The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons began like how all of their albums begin: with input from their fictional “mentor and songwriter,” Randy Fitzsimmons. This time, though, Fitzsimmons seems to have helped them from beyond the grave.

Inspired by the simmering one-man rebellion that kicked off a tremendous tide-change in Barcelona, writer-director Marcel Barrena (“Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea”) and Spain’s The Mediapro Studio have begun filming “The 47.”
Tms has released first look images. The premise centers on social activist bus driver Manolo Vital, played by three-time Goya Award winner Eduardo Fernández (“Smoke & Mirrors”), as he grows increasingly outraged at the abject neglect faced by immigrant communities outside the city’s center, whose neighborhoods, peeled by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia, had only just achieved running water.
Stonewalled by the City Council, Vital seizes a bus used on Barcelona’s #47 line and extends its route to Torre Baró in an attempt to prove that the vehicle can safely service the outlying communities in need.
“What the film shows is that this good man tried to convince everyone that it was feasible. The contempt of...

The Hives have readied The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, their first studio album in over 10 years. The Swedish rockers will drop the LP on August 11th; today, they’ve shared lead single, “Bogus Operandi.” Check it out below.
The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons has just the type of absurd origin story you’d expect from The Hives. In a press release, the band claim that they haven’t heard from the titular character — the elusive “founder, mentor and songwriter” who started the group 30 years ago — since they released their last album, 2012’s Lex Hives. Recently, they found an obituary that led them to Fitzsimmons’ tombstone; only, upon digging, they found not a corpse, but demo tapes and a piece of paper plotting The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons.
Meanwhile, Hives frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist had this to say about the album: “There’s no maturity or anything like that bullshit, because...

The San Sebastian Festival opens on Sept. 16 with a bang: Alberto Rodriguez’s “Prison 77,” most probably the biggest Spanish film of 2022, the latest title from one of the Spain’s most preeminent auteurs and a foretaste of one possible future face of Spanish cinema, thanks to Movistar+.
“Prison 77” begins as a fish-out-of-water jail survival thriller. Manuel, in 1977, a young accountant, played by Miguel Herrán, is sent to Barcelona’s legendary Modelo penitentiary pending trial for embezzlement.
It grows, however, for all of its length, as a character-driven tale of psychological observance, as Miguel gradually befriends Pino, his seen-it-all cell mate, who just wants a quiet life.
Charting “the evolving relationship between two completely different people, a young accountant with his whole life before him, and Pino, who’s lived nearly his whole life behind bars,” “Prison 77” is a story of friendship and solidarity, says José Antonio Félez...

“Why don’t you come around for dinner?,” Barcelona lifeguard Gerard Casals (Dani Rovira) asks his boss, Oscar Camps (Eduard Fernández), at the beginning of “Mediterráneo: The Law of the Sea.”
“I’ve got other plans,” says Camps. Cut to his sitting on his sofa, eating a warmed-up microwave dinner watching TV on his laptop.
Then Camps catches a news report featuring the horrific images of 3-year-old Syrian toddler Alan Kurdi, his lifeless body lying on a Turkish beach, washed by waves, after the dingy he was in capsized.

Opening up what could be a rich vein in Spanish movies coming onto the open market, Film Factory Entertainment has acquired world sales rights outside Spain to “Modelo 77,” the next film by Alberto Rodríguez, director of “Marshland” and “The Plague.”
A potential jewel in Spanish cinema’s 2022 crown, “Modelo 77” is produced by Spanish pay TV/VOD giant Movistar Plus and Madrid-based Atípica Films, Rodríguez’s career-long producer. It raises the large question of whether “Modelo 77” will mark a fully-fledged embarkment by Movistar Plus into regular movie co-production with Spain’s film industry.
Few titles, if that were to happen, will tick more boxes than Rodríguez’s “Modelo 77,” which Film Factory will bring onto the open market at this week’s Toronto Festival.
A penitentiary drama-thriller feature directed by Alberto Rodríguez and written by Rafael Cobos and the director, the creative powerhouses behind “Marshland” and Movistar Plus banner series “The Plague,...
