Scarlett Johansson is herself a force to reckon with but even she felt a little nervous while working with the renowned director, Woody Allen. Known for films like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Midnight in Paris, and so on, Woody Allen has won four Academy Awards, 10 BAFTAs, 2 Golden Globes and so much more. All in all, he is a well-decorated filmmaker and it’s no surprise that actors would feel a little intimated in front of him.

Despite the fact that Scarlett Johansson had been in plenty of projects before starring in Woody Allen’s Match Point, she was still a tad bit nervous. Due to her nerves, the actress had a hard time filming on her first day but eventually decided to put her head in the game.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)

For only the second time in its 15 year history there is no actor among the honorees for this year’s select group receiving the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Governors Awards. The AMPAS Board Of Governors have chosen to give Academy Honorary Awards to music legend Quincy Jones and veteran Casting Director Juliet Taylor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to British writer/director Richard Curtis, and the Irving G. Watching Woody Allen's 1979 romantic comedy "Manhattan" in 2024 is certainly a fraught affair. For decades after its release, "Manhattan" was hailed as one of the filmmaker's best, frankly and stylishly telling a story of modern New York life, revealing the embarrassing impulses of a neurotic man struggling through his own acknowledged sexual and romantic weaknesses. In the film, Allen plays Isaac, a 42-year-old, twice-divorced comedy writer trying to pen a book about how much he loves New York City. As part of his midlife crisis, he is romantically and sexually involved with Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), a 17-year-old prep school student.
Allen's fictional relationship with an underage girl was, at the time, seen as a strange quirk of the modern cosmopolitan arts milieu, and many critics remained unconcerned. It wouldn't be for a few more years, in 1991, that details of Allen's personal life would begin to emerge. He married the much-younger...

Writer and director Ari Aster has begun production on his newest film, “Eddington,” and he has assembled quite a cast.
Now boasting two Oscars, Emma Stone will appear in the film, as will Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix, marking his second collaboration with Aster after last year’s love-it-or-hate-it-but-definitely-respect-it “Beau is Afraid.” Oscar-nominee and current Harkonnen meme king Austin Butler, Marvel’s future Reed Richards Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Tony winner Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr. round out the incredibly stacked cast.
A24, which has released all of Aster’s features (“Hereditary” and “Midsommar” before “Beau”) announced the “contemporary western” that is “coming soon” via Instagram. Aster has parted ways with his usual cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski and is working with the legendary Persian-French lenser Darius Khondji, whose credits include “Uncut Gems,” “The Lost City of Z,” “Midnight in Paris,” “Stealing Beauty,” “Seven,” and “ The City of Lost Children.

After he gets fired from his job at an Indiana sporting goods store and his wife walks out on him, Pryce hedges his bets entirely on a troubled 17-year-old golf phenom. Hailing from Apple Studios, the untiled series will be directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, and executive produced by Propagate Content’s Ben Silverman (“The Office”), Howard T. Owens and Rodney Ferrell, Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady (upcoming “Ripley” and “The Fall Guy”), Piece of Work’s Lee Eisenberg and Natalie Sandy, Chris Moynihan, Keller and Wilson. Comb through the Oscar nominations this year and you’ll find that there records being broken left, right, and center while more records could be matched or broken at the ceremony this coming Sunday on March 10.
One of those such records concerns the Best Original Screenplay category, in which the nominees are “Anatomy of a Fall” (Justine Triet and Arthur Harari), “The Holdovers” (David Hemingson), “Maestro” (Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer), “May December” (Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik), and “Past Lives” (Celine Song).
It’s “Maestro” co-scribe Singer we’re looking at here for his work in penning the Netflix biopic. This is his second nomination. His first bid came in 2016, when he won this very category, Best Original Screenplay, alongside director Tom McCarthy for “Spotlight.” It’s interesting that Singer now has two nominations in the same category, both of which came for co-writing a script based on a...

We are about a month away from the 96th Academy Awards, which will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 10. Many categories seem to have fallen into place as to who will win, especially most of the above-the-line races — specifically Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.
As our Gold Derby odds currently stand, Original Screenplay is still a red-hot race between “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Holdovers.” However, I believe this category is a safer bet than a lot of Gold Derby fans realizes. Here are five reasons why “Anatomy of a Fall” screenwriters Justine Triet and Arthur Harari will win Best Original Screenplay at the 2024 Oscars.
1. It received nominations in every important category.

“I’m seeing it logged on Letterboxd. You know anything?”
This was the message I received from an industry friend. The topic was Woody Allen’s 50-somethingth directorial effort, Coup de Chance. Little did I know a network of file sharing and secret screenings were already underway, part of a series that (almost) included Timothée Chalamet.
The 88-year-old director’s latest and perhaps final film debuted at the Venice Film Festival out of competition in early September 2023 to solid reviews, and is currently boasting an 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. (The Hollywood Reporter’s critic Leslie Felperin was muted in her praise, calling it “competent but forgettable.”) The droll relationship drama with a soupçon of criminality has accrued $7.4 million in receipts, according to BoxOfficeMojo, with its top four markets being Italy, Spain, Russia and France.

Masters of the Air, created by John Orloff, is one of those series that relies not only on the filmmaking but also on the theme around which it revolves. World War II movies are a genre in themselves, and there have been miniseries like Band of Brothers that are etched in people’s memories as one of the greatest shows ever made. Masters of the Air thus has some great help and some great competition as well, but overall, the series is expected to be an epic narrative about the 100th Bomber Squads, who put their lives on the line to carry out the mission to weaken Nazi Germany during World War 2. There are some heavy hitters in the series, and we expect some outstanding performances out of them all.

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.

Tom Hiddleston’s Cinematic Voyage: Breaking Free from Loki and the Marvel Universe ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
In the vibrant tapestry of Hollywood, Tom Hiddleston first caught my attention in 2011 when he brought the mischievous Loki to life in Thor. However, his journey into the realm of cinema began long before that iconic role. Hiddleston’s cinematic voyage commenced with memorable performances in Joanna Hogg’s film Unrelated (2007). As Loki gained widespread recognition within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hiddleston expanded his horizons beyond the MCU, taking on a prominent leading role in the high-budget film Kong: Skull Island (2017). This venture underscored his versatility, proving his ability to command the big screen with distinction.
Beyond the glitz of Hollywood blockbusters, Hiddleston is a seasoned stage performer. His theatrical journey began with a remarkable debut in Journey’s End in 1999, marking the inception of a prolific stage career. Engaging in various theatrical productions, including...

Woody Allen is a four-time Academy Award winner who has proved incredibly prolific in his decades-long career, writing, directing, and oftentimes starring in nearly a film a year for over 50 years. But how many of those are classics? Let’s take a look back at 25 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
After years as a joke writer and standup comic, Allen transitioned into filmmaking penning such screenplays as “What’s New Pussycat?” (1965) and starring in such titles as “Casino Royale” (1967). His first credit as a director was the comedically overdubbed Japanese spy thriller “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” (1966).
The Woody Allen as we know him emerged in 1969 with the farcical mockumentary “Take the Money and Run” (1969), made when he was 34 years old. The success of that film led to a string of critically acclaimed absurdist comedies, including “Bananas” (1971) and “Sleeper” (1973).

Fantasy is a genre that is often hard done by the awards groups, particularly the academy. Occasionally, the odd masterpiece such as Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, which won 17 Oscars, will break their barrier but, in general, the genre doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Even “Harry Potter” failed to earn an Oscar win and was never nominated in any above-the-line category.
However, Andrew Haigh‘s “All of Us Strangers” is poised to be the next fantastical film that makes the academy’s voters sit up and take notice. Part romance, part ghost story, the film is loosely based on Taichi Yamada‘s 1987 novel “Strangers.” The story follows Andrew Scott‘s Adam as a writer struggling with his latest project who forms a relationship with Paul Mescal‘s Harry. As their relationship progresses, Adam finds himself drawn to his past and visits his hometown only...

As of this writing our combined predictions for this year’s Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar consists of the following films in order of their racetrack odds: “Killers of the Flower Moon” (39/10 odds), “Oppenheimer” (4/1 odds), “Poor Things” (9/2 odds), “American Fiction” (11/2 odds) and “The Zone of Interest” (17/2 odds). However, despite “American Fiction” currently ranking fourth, I’d like to dig into its possible path to win this particular race.
Adapted from Percival Everett‘s 2001 novel “Erasure,” “American Fiction” follows Monk (Jeffrey Wright), a frustrated novelist who’s tired of the offensive tropes in Black entertainment. To prove his point, he writes his own outlandish book that propels him into the heart of hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain. On paper, the current top three for Best Adapted Screenplay have a lot going for them, but they also have some disadvantages that could benefit “American Fiction.”

In a milestone move, the board of Mediapro Group, has approved the departure of managing partner Jaume Roures, the best known face of the company who, since co-founding Mediapro in 1994, was instrumental in building the company into Spain’s biggest independent international film-tv player.
Taxto Benet, the other head of Mediapro, remains as company president and CEO; all other key figures at Mediapro remain in their posts, including Juan Ruíz de Gauna, director general, Laura Fernández Espeso, CEO of The Mediapro Studio, and Carme Anglada, head of communication.
Roures’ exit comes at request of Mediapro majority shareholder Southwind Group, which controls over 80% of the group and minority shareholder Wpp, according to a written statement issued Friday by Mediapro.

“Coup de Chance” bowed at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Monday, September 4. Written and directed by Woody Allen, it’s the filmmaker’s 50th feature and the first shot entirely in the French language with English subtitles. The 87-year-old Allen was controversially on hand to attend the screening in person, drawing a small group of protestors on site due to longstanding but never substantiated child sexual abuse allegations made by his daughter Dylan Farrow. The audience in attendance at the world premiere warmly embraced the feature and its writer-director with a reported three-minute ovation upon its conclusion.
Premiering out of competition at the festival, the film was shot in Paris and features an all-French cast. A twisty tale of murder, “Coup de Chance” stars Lou de Laage and Melvil Poupaud as Fanny and Jean, described as “an ideal couple who have everything. Fulfilled in their professional life, they live in...

Woody Allen returned to the Venice Film Festival this weekend for the world premiere of “Coup de Chance,” a romantic thriller that marks his 50th, and he suggests, quite possibly his last, feature film. The French-language film, playing at one of Europe’s major festivals, represents the continued mutual embrace between the director and the continent, after controversies have limited his funding stateside. This accounts for his pondering retirement: Allen says that producing a new movie means hustling to secure backing and at 87, he’s not sure he still wants to do that kind of work.

Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own.
H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Human beings live in societies whether they like it or not. Some people like being in their society, while others hate being in theirs. And then there is a third group of people who stay silent by trying their best to fit in. Our protagonist Shu (Liang Cuishan) belongs to this group. Shu is someone who seems to fit well in her society. She is a devoted partner to her fiancé. She leads a mundane life and takes care of him in a dutiful manner as scripted by society. But what happens when someone living in this kind of bubble gets out, finds happiness outside her comfort zone, cherishes every moment of it and soon realizes that the past few years of her life might be a mistake?...

One could make -- and no doubt some resourceful Marvel Cinematic Universe fans have made -- a video about Loki (Tom Hiddleston) hooking up with different characters in the MCU using footage from Hiddleston's non-Marvel projects. The actor had a tragic affair with Rachel Weisz (Melina Vostokoff in "Black Widow") in "The Deep Blue Sea," played one-half of a pair of vampiric lovers along with Tilda Swinton (the McU's Ancient One) in "Only Lovers Left Alive," and starred as Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light," with the Scarlet Witch herself, Elizabeth Olsen, playing the late country music legend's wife. Hiddleston even had a fling with Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films) in "The Night Manager," in addition to a non-zero amount of sexual tension with "Captain Marvel" actor Brie Larson in "Kong: Skull Island."

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Remember “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”? No, not the opening sequence of “The Last Crusade” starring River Phoenix as a teenage version of Harrison Ford’s iconic archeologist. We’re talking about the short-lived ’90s series starring Sean Patrick Flanery as the title character. The two-season curiosity has been mostly left behind in its decade, but now Disney has acknowledged it — and is putting it on Disney+, no less.
The news was announced out of The Walt Disney Company’s Upfronts Presentation on Tuesday afternoon. The show will be available to stream on Disney+ starting May 31, in anticipation of the release of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” in theaters next month. In addition, all four of the initial “Indiana Jones” movies — “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “The Temple of Doom,” “The Last Crusade,” and “The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” — will also be added to the streamer, after...

Who doesn't love Owen Wilson? In the late '90s, the blond star burst on the scene in Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket," snuck into big productions like "The Haunting" and "Armageddon," and then hit the big time when he teamed with Jackie Chan for the blockbuster "Shanghai-Noon" and its sequel. Since then, Wilson has expanded his portfolio with instant classics like "Zoolander," "Wedding Crashers," and "Midnight in Paris," and continues to show off his knack for lighthearted comedy in films such as "The French Dispatch," and the Marvel Disney+ series, "Loki."
Wilson even has his own animated franchise, Disney/Pixar's "Cars," in which he plays Lightning McQueen, a role he's returned to various times, including the California Adventure theme park ride. There's nothing he can't do, and his careful project selection typically ensures quality despite a small handful of duds during his nearly three-decade stay on the Hollywood A-list.

Rachel McAdams had been anointed Hollywood's latest "It Girl" when she was tapped to grace the cover of Vanity Fair's 2006 Oscar issue alongside Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. She was coming off a string of critical and commercial successes in "Mean Girls," "The Notebook," "Red Eye" and "The Family Stone," and appeared to be on the cusp of superstardom. But when McAdams learned, upon arriving at the Tom Ford photoshoot, that she was expected to pose nude, she walked, promptly fired her publicist (who'd failed to inform her of the shoot's parameters), and pressed the pause button on her film career.
Prior to the #MeToo revolution, firing up double rockets at the exploitative Hollywood movie star machine was considered career suicide. This was how women got smeared with the "difficult" label. McAdams, however, persevered and has established herself as one of the most brilliantly unpredictable actors of her generation. She's...

Magical realism is something many directors have toiled with. Many have been successful in putting together a good movie, but there are movies that just fell flat in the execution of this genre. There is Forrest Gump and Midnight in Paris, which beautifully use magic realism, and one would want any other film in this genre to follow in their footsteps. Meanwhile, there is “Oh Belinda,” which tries hard to bring this beautiful genre back to life but falls flat quite early in the runtime of the film. Why is that? “Oh Belinda” is a Turkish-language comedy-drama that is a Netflix Original and was released on the platform on April 7, 2023.
Like any movie that showcases the life of a superstar actress, the film must begin with a montage of them being in a movie or shooting for a movie. “Oh Belinda” begins with Dilara’s life being projected as larger than anybody else’s,...

It's not easy for every film to be a hit, but Quentin Tarantino wants his body of work to be as close to perfect as possible. Almost every movie he's ever made has been met with widespread critical acclaim, and he plans to keep it that way. Although there's no surefire way to make every movie a success, there is one method that Tarantino's sticking to — quit while you're ahead.
Two of Tarantino's favorite directors are old Hollywood auteurs Howard Hawks and Billy Wilder. Both have a diverse set of hits in their extensive filmography, from noirs like "The Big Sleep" to musicals like "Some Like it Hot" and Westerns like "Rio Bravo." They also churned out successful movies for decades, but Tarantino and most critics would agree that they continued working past their prime. Making a film like "Rio Lobo," the sequel to "Rio Bravo," is Tarantino's worst nightmare as an artist.

Best Cinematography at the Oscars will be a particularly interesting category this year, since two of the nominees are the only nominations received by their respective films.
SEEJohn Williams (‘The Fabelmans’): 5 reasons why we’re all underestimating him at Oscars
It’s also interesting because four movies that received quite a bit of below-the-line support from other academy branches –”Top Gun: Maverick,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “The Batman,” and even the presumptive Best Picture favorite, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” – were omitted from the category. In fact, none of the bigger theatrical releases were nominated in favor of two streaming movies, two movies that didn’t make much of a dent at the box office, and Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis.” Also, only two of this year’s Cinematography-nominated films received a Production Design nomination (“Elvis” and “All Quiet on the Western Front”), whereas last year the two categories matched five-for-five.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers and horror (“Get Out”). And six of them won the big prize, bringing the total number of Best Picture champs with Oscar-winning original screenplays to 18. By comparison, 42 films have done this on the adapted side including the 2022 double dipper “Coda.”

Let’s toast actor Tom Hiddleston for his own Disney+ streaming show “Loki.” It focuses on the wily and witty adventures of his God of Mischief and Norse deity that he has played in no less than six Marvel Comic films, ranging from 2011’s “Thor” with Chris Hemsworth in the title role to 2019’s “Avengers: End Game.” The British actor initially started his career on the stage and is currently Tony-nominated for his lead role in a 2020 revival of Harold Pinter’s play “Betrayal.” In 2016, he was up for two Emmys as lead actor and as a producer of AMC’s limited series “The Night Manager.”
But Hiddleston also has a substantial list of films that don’t involve creating mayhem as Thor’s nemesis and adopted brother. Tour our photo gallery with a list of 10 of the actor’s most notable movie performances, ranked worst to best, including “Midnight in Paris,...

Alisa Lepselter, Editor: “You Hurt My Feelings” (Premieres)
A witty comedy starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a novelist trying to find success with her sophomore book, “You Hurt My Feelings” reunites Alisa Lepselter with writer-director Nicole Holofcener, whose directorial debut, “Walking and Talking”, was also Lepselter’s first feature editing credit. Last awards season, Apple’s heartwarming family drama “Coda” became just the seventh Best Picture recipient in history to pull off a clean sweep at the Oscars. That is, it not only claimed the top prize — it won every category in which it was nominated. Can A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” now pull off a similar feat at the 2023 Oscars?
Here’s a quick review of the previous seven clean sweepers:
“Wings,” 1927-28 (2/2)
“Grand Hotel,” 1931-32 (1/1)
“It Happened One Night” 1934 (5/5)
“Gigi,” 1958 (9/9)
“The Last Emperor,” 1987 (9/9)
“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” 2003 (11/11)
“Coda,” 2021 (3/3)
The return of the Oscar clean sweep delivered by “Coda” (which also won Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sian Heder) actually follows a pattern set forth by “Wings” almost a century ago. That is, home runs don’t happen every Oscar night. They’re more of a once every-few-decades phenomenon.
