“The Penguin” is upon us, but before we jump back into Gotham City, it’s important to remember where we left off.
The series is a direct spinoff of the 2022 film “The Batman.” The film saw the early days of the Caped Crusader (Robert Pattinson) investigating a number of murders at the hand of The Riddler (Paul Dano), which led him to cross paths with Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell). Oz is a far cry from the legendary Batman villain he’s destined to become, but the film sets up his power grab opportunity.
Oz serves as a lieutenant in the Falcone crime family in the film and the death of the patriarch sets up some room for him to climb. But with a three-hour movie to remember, there’s a lot of information to distill before the HBO show drops.

Fans have been waiting to see who will be hosting the first episodes of the upcoming 50th season of "Saturday Night Live," and today, the answers arrived. Typically, "SNL" only announces hosts for the next three shows in a given window, but I'm willing to bet that organizing scheduled for this milestone season is going to require a lot of advance planning to make it all work. As of today, we know who will be hosting the first five episodes of "SNL" season 50, including the season premiere later this month.
To begin with, fresh off winning an Emmy for her outstanding performance in the Max comedy series "Hacks," the amazing Jean Smart will be hosting the season premiere of "SNL" on September 28. Smart has had a long career in film and television, stretching from Fox's hit series "24" to Damien Chazelle's wild Hollywood romp "Babylon," but this is the...

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” seemed to put a decisive nail in the coffin of Wanda Maximoff — or rather, a decisive temple crash — but if you weren’t sure, the first episode of “Agatha All Along” comes in hot confirming that yes, she’s really gone. But…is she?
In the premiere, now streaming on Disney+, we pick up with Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) back in Westview, where she still believes herself to be Agnes. But, where Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) left her as Agnes the nosy neighbor, we now find her as Agnes the detective.
As she rolls up to a crime scene, we learn that the Westview police found a Jane Doe in the woods. Her apparent cause of death is blunt force trauma, she has scarlet hair, and blackened fingers. All signs point to it being Wanda Maximoff.
And, as Agnes’ colleague says, “she’s really most sincerely dead.

Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is back in production for Season 2, with the streamer revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as the fan-favorite character Toph.
In a clip released as part of Netflix’s annual Geeked Week fan event, Toph’s feet are seen in closeup before she stomps down and demonstrates her earthbending.
The 17-year-old Cech is likely best known to audiences as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy “Always Be My Maybe,” released in 2019. Funnily enough, she also played a younger version of Ali Wong’s character in...

David Schwimmer appeared on the “Origins with Cush Jumbo” podcast (via People) and was surprised to hear the host talk about a conversation she once had with Matthew Perry in which the late actor praised Schwimmer’s physical comedy chops. Perry and Jumbo starred together on a season of “The Good Fight,” while Perry and Schwimmer spent 10 seasons working together on “Friends.”
Jumbo, who had long been impressed by Schwimmer’s physical comedy, was on “The Good Fight” set with Perry and asked her co-star if that style of comedy just came natural to Schwimmer.

Michael Emerson has played quite a few villainous characters over the years, with his latest role as Leland Townsend on Paramount+‘s Evil—gone too soon, sadly, after four seasons. And if you ask him, that’s not even his most evil character! “Leland would vote for himself to be the most evil, but then he’s really, he’s too much of a weenie to be truly the most evil,” he told TV Insider when he stopped by to discuss the final season of Evil and we asked him to pick his most villainous character. Nor would he consider his Lost character for the top spot. “Ben Linus, he’s not hardly a villain at all, is he? That’s a case of good writing and good context,” he explained. “When we meet him, we have our band of lovable castaways, and then we have the dark, dangerous island...

FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has officially rejected a call by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump to “take away” the government’s broadcast license from ABC, after Trump was angry about his treatment from ABC News’ moderators in his Sept. 10 debate with VP Kamala Harris.
The morning after the debate, Trump called in to Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” to accuse moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis of unfairly fact-checking his arguments while not doing the same for Harris. Trump said the “rigged” debate was “3-to-1” and said government regulators “ought to take away” ABC’s “license for the way they did that.

You can overhear a lot of weird things walking through the park, but an excited, sudden exclamation of “What if it was a horde of rats?!” is definitely up there. Yet the reason, in this particular case, wasn’t an ominous one: It was part of the brainstorming process for the opening title sequence for Netflix’s recent (excellent) adaptation of “The Decameron.”
Mark Bashore and Katrina Crawford were the parkgoers in question and the creative directors of Plains of Yonder. Netflix’s original shows and movies typically dominate the streamer’s most-viewed content rankings. But it still serves up hundreds of millions of hours of content licensed from third parties, as shown by Netflix’s massive data dump for viewing covering the first half of 2024.

When director Matt Reeves was writing “The Batman,” and effectively taking the franchise reigns with what was expected to be the first of a trilogy of films featuring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, he knew he wanted his Gotham to be a more grounded cinematic world. Inspired by the tone of Frank Miller’s comicbook series “Batman: Year One,” in which the chaotic real world of 1970s New York was a recognizable underpinning, Reeves wanted his Gotham to be recognizable to a modern audience — a direct reflection of our own broken and divisive times. That tone, more so than interlocking narrative, would be the glue.
It’s a vision Reeves had always imagined could neatly spin-off into an HBO-like series, especially when switching out of Batman’s point-of-view in the movies, and exploring the world through the eyes of one of the Rogues Gallery villains.
