The crime-ridden streets of 1970s Montreal come alive in Dusk for a hitman. Based on the true story of Donald Lavoie, a notorious gang enforcer, the film transports viewers back in time. We meet Donald, a man who makes his living carrying out hits for local crime boss Claude Dubois. Life is steady for Donald; he does what’s asked without question and provides for his family in return.
But troubled times are ahead. When Claude demands Donald kill his own brother Carl, who’s creating problems, Donald is faced with an impossible choice. Meanwhile, Detective Roger Burns is hot on their trail, putting pressure on the whole operation. As danger mounts from all sides, Donald realizes his unquestioning loyalty may lead only to ruin. With enemies mounting and trust fading fast, he must find a way to navigate this dark world he never meant to stay in for too long.

"Your brother is no to be trusted, Donald." "It's him or me." Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for Dusk for a Hitman, a Quebecois crime thriller arriving in the US to watch on VOD starting in April. This already premiered and originally opened in Canada last year obviously. Set in the late 1970s, the most feared hitman in the Montreal underworld, Donald Lavoie, found himself hunted down by his former accomplices and by a tenacious police officer. Donald finds himself caught in a tightening vise in this film based loosely on a true story. The Montreal crime thriller stars Éric Bruneau as Donald Lavoie, with Benoît Gouin, Rose-Marie Perreault, Sylvain Marcel, Simon Landry-Desy, and Joakim Robillard. This has such an obvious slick and cheesy look and feel to it, even with this guy's mustache being an important part of the performance. It's worth a look if you're into...

Below are the seven series that drew whoops and appreciative hollers from a room full of international buyers.
Late summer doldrums, young adult love, and the generally placid rhythms of suburban life take on additional heft and resonance for a group of friends all suffering from cystic fibrosis – especially once one’s condition takes a turn for the worst. Far from jerking tears, the offbeat comedy “Thin Air” finds irreverent and life-affirming humor following young adult characters that feel the pangs of mortality more acutely than most. Produced by Urbania and created by acclaimed writer Jean-Christophe Réhel, the bittersweet series offers another plum role to “Mommy” star Antoine Olivier Pilon.

French production and distribution firm Oble is to handle international licensing of Canadian hit drama series “Aller Simple” or “No Return.”
Produced by French-Canadian firm Sphere Media, the six-episode psychological thriller premiered on prime-time earlier this year in Canada and has been a hit with critics and audiences. Written by Annie Pierard, Bernard Dansereau and Etienne Pierard-Dansereau, who all previously worked on Sphere’s “Epidemie” (aka “The Outbreak”), the show sees six complete strangers; a former policeman, an art-dealer, a retired teacher, a marketing director, a criminal lawyer and a businesswoman, en-route to a reclusive billionaire’s home when their helicopter makes an emergency landing deep in the forest. Having survived intact, they stumble across a fishing camp. But disturbing incidents suggest...

In one of the pandemic’s pop culture gifts, The CW is now airing CBC’s 2019 drama Coroner, which has already aired 2 seasons in Canada and has been renewed for a third. Serinda Swan plays Jenny Cooper, an ER doctor who, when we first meet her in the premiere, has lost her husband suddenly to a brain aneurysm that occurred at their teenage son’s swim meet. Jenny quits her job and becomes a coroner, moving her son Ross (Ehren Kassam) out of the city to a ramshackle home of one of the first deceased people she examines, a home that comes with its own handyman, Liam Bouchard.
Is the title a bit on the nose? Yes. Is the title card perhaps the most CW thing I’ve ever seen? Sure. Do I wish Ross hadn’t said “obvs” in the pilot when talking about how he wished his father hadn’t died?...

The CW has hired a Coroner from Canada to fill its coronavirus-impacted schedule, with Wednesday’s Stateside premiere of the imported drama.
The series stars Serinda Swan (Graceland, Marvel’s Inhumans) as Jenny Cooper, a former ER doc who takes a job as a coroner three months after her husband tragically died of an aneurysm — and after she saw a mysterious black dog wandering near his body. Jenny immediately begins to ruffle feathers in her new gig (“I like being a problem,” she tells Detective McAvoy, played by Dark Matter‘s Roger Cross) when she fires an arrogant pathologist after he ignores her orders.

The CW has acquired former DC Universe series Swamp Thing, based on the DC character, along with Canadian drama Coroner and half-hour British comedy Dead Pixels, from BBC Studios, in their U.S. debuts. All will premiere on broadcast and the network’s free ad-supported streaming platforms. They join previously announced Tell Me A Story, from CBS All Access. Premiere dates and times will be announced later.
The CW is known for using acquired scripted series as summer programming. This year is different as there is a lot of uncertainty over when TV series will be able to go into production amid the coronavirus pandemic, so it is possible that the CW would use some of the acquisitions for late summer or fall to give its originals more time to produce new episodes. The CW is expected to unveil its fall schedule on Thursday.

For hockey legend Terry Sawchuk, playing goal in the National Hockey League was more of a calling or destiny than a vocation, or so the new biopic, aptly named Goalie, would have you believe. Indeed, it seems that from his humble beginnings in rural Winnipeg, to winning the Stanley Cup four times – three times with the Detroit Red Wings and once with the Toronto Maple Leafs – Sawchuk was constantly plagued by a troubled past as well as the numerous injuries sustained throughout his twenty-year career, during which he played for four of the Original Six teams, until dying after a drunken fight in 1970.
In fact, the film begins with a scene depicting Sawchuk’s autopsy after the aforementioned fight. The examiner notes all of the damage that has befallen Sawchuk’s body throughout his career. It’s scene that should set the tone for the film to come. Something that...

How acclaimed filmmaker Denys Arcand went from earning an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of “The Barbarian Invasions” to writing the truly execrable script for “An Eye for Beauty” is an even greater mystery than what drives his characters to make their oft illogical decisions. Instead of a relationship drama, the film works better as a 100-minute ad for Canadian travel or the benefits of competitive sports for adults. Its failure to succeed on any level but the visual is all the more puzzling due to its provenance from a celebrated director with decades of experience. Unlike what we believe, the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois isn't just a film festival. It's also an opportunity to see the pilot of upcoming TV series before everybody. In fact, on Friday, February 26, the pilot of Musée Eden will be presented in the auditorium of the Grande bibliothèque at 7 Pm.
