In the new Stan show C*A*U*G*H*T you can expect an overflow of absurdity and irreverence that is presented through a satirical comedy. C*A*U*G*H*T, a six-part series, is all about four Australian soldiers getting captured by a freedom fighter cum terrorist organization. Sometimes political satire and mockery of the media turns out to be really hilarious, but sometimes it just doesn’t work at all. However, some famous faces like Sean Penn, who is also the producer of the series, and Sandra Sarandon can catch your attention, luring you to invest your time on the show, but it’s sad that this bizarre comedy show is a complete waste of Penn and Sarandon.
The deeper we get into the plotline of C*A*U*G*H*T, the more we start scratching our heads, questioning what is really going on. The...

The youngest of Bollywood’s famous Kapoor brothers, he did not have their one defining and enduring cinematic image – Raj’s naive "tramp" identity in the Charlie Chaplin tradition or Shammi’s Elvis-like jiving, rebellious "playboy" persona, but went to surpass both in sheer diversity of his acting.
With his copybook good looks, rakish smile, infectious charm, toothy grin and languid drawl, or the air of earnestness, playing romantic roles, be they of businessmen, police inspectors, college students, et al came naturally to him, but Shashi Kapoor went on to play more ‘common man’ roles, decadent princes, aging poets and even angels with the same charm and intensity.
Born on March 18, 1938 in the then Calcutta to Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarn ‘Rama’ Devi, Balbir Raj ‘Shashi’ Kapoor was destined to walk in his family’s footsteps on the silver screen.

Malayalam cinemaShammi Thilakan’s real breakthrough came somewhere during the turn of the last decade, with the entry of new filmmakers and writers.Neelima MenonFor the longest time, Shammi Thilakan lived under the shadow of his legendary father Thilakan. Shammi, a stage artist, made his debut on screen in the Kg George film (Irakal) and struggled to find his space in Malayalam cinema shortly thereafter. In hindsight, that his father was already or well on his way to becoming an established actor might have stalled his chances during the initial phases of his career. In the early 90s, the roles that mostly came his way were those of an antagonist, cop, or yes man – largely one-dimensional and unmemorable. Interestingly, Shammi Thilakan was known more as a voice artist during this period. If his deep baritone fitted Raghuvaran (Vyooham) and Salim Ghouse (Thazhvaram) perfectly, it added heft to the wickedness of...

ReviewActors are spilled across the narrative, but instead of adding to the frolic like in Alphonse’s previous films, in ‘Gold’ it is mostly just chaos.CrisImagine that tin game most of us played as kids – many names written in small chits of paper dropped inside a tin that is then shaken vigourously. After 160-plus minutes of Alphonse Puthren’s Malayalam comedy Gold, the head feels somewhat like that tin. I am still pulling out names from it, and I have managed to recall 30 so far. Star-studded is not the right word for Gold. The film has actors spilled all across the script and just as soon as you catch up with one name, the person is nowhere to be seen. It is of course Alphonse, a filmmaker known for penning long scripts and being generous with the cast. But in his two previous much-adored ventures if it added to the fun and frolic,...

ReviewTrembling, vulnerable, and oscillating between standing up for herself and giving the marriage another chance, Aishwaya carries the film on her shoulders.Sowmya RajendranA hand lights candles slowly one by one, the flickering flame offering hope in the dark. At the end of it, we see Ammu’s glowing face. She’s the bride-to-be. Directed by Charukesh Sekar, Telugu film Ammu is a familiar story in society but not on screen. Aishwarya Lekshmi plays the titular character, a young woman caught in a violent marriage. If Jasmeet K Reen’s Darlings took the route of satire to lay out the psyche of a woman who undergoes domestic violence, Ammu paints a realistic portrait of it. Circle Inspector Ravindranath (Naveen Chandra) is an upright officer who is capable of showing sensitivity to survivors of sexual violence. He’s a loving and romantic husband who takes his responsibility towards his wife seriously.

Stars have an innate age like the quizzes that keep appearing on gaming sites like what is your real age? Jaya Bhaduri is ‘Guddi’ at heart, a teenager who never quite grows up, Nirupa Roy has never been young. Shammi is a young man in his early twenties while Raj Kapoor and others are in their late twenties.
Amitabh Bachchan is a man of matured years, a man who is at that age at which he has seen it done it all. There is not only a maturity and insight of years, but his is a face of having absorbed life in no small measure, a holism in thought that is not possible without a distance which the passions of youth cannot attain.

ReviewThere is a lot to like about Malayankunju. The dialogues are minimal and most of what we experience is through Fahadh’s frenzied eyes and his faltering screams.Sowmya RajendranFacebookEver since Kumbalangi Nights and its marvellous villain Shammi, Fahadh Faasil has built himself a reputation for playing characters who go over the edge. In Sajimon Prabhakar’s Malayankunju, he plays Anikuttan, a bigoted repairman for electronic goods who is hypersensitive to sound. And then, the family next door brings home a newborn. The constantly wailing baby breaks Anikuttan’s focus as he tries to fix the devices that clutter his room. The room may look cramped and functional to the average onlooker, but it is Anikuttan’s universe. A claustrophobia-inducing space that he willingly embraces. It’s a metaphor that makes more and more sense as the film progresses. It’s hard to empathise with Anikuttan. He is blatantly casteist...

One is an answer to questions on the lackluster action taken towards Vijay Babu, producer and actor accused of rape of a woman actor – ‘but the case is under the consideration of the court’. Two is an answer to repeated questions on the recently disbanded Internal Committee (Ic) of the association - 'why don't you ask any positive questions, instead of harping on these' – ‘these’ meaning issues of sexual assault and lack of an Ic for women to make complaints at. In ‘Badtameez Dil’ from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ranbir’s footwork seems inspired from choreography in songs like ‘Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera’ (Teesri Manzil, 1966) and ‘Baar Baar Dekho’ (China Town, 1962).
The makers of the film, however, maintain it’s only a coincidence. “I don’t know if we can call it an ode to Shammiji; it wasn’t a planned move. But now, when we look at some of the moves and Ranbir’s mad energy, the similarities can’t be ignored. I think people see the connection because Shammiji also possessed unparalleled energy when it came to dance,” says director Ayan Mukerji.
Shot over five days, the song that has been choreographed by Remo D’Souza, is also special because Ranbir brought in his 30th birthday during its shoot. “I didn’t have any song-and-dance number in Wake Up Sid (2009), but I always wanted to explore shooting one.

“I always believe that my films should give some hope to the man who comes to watch them for those three hours. If he goes home on an optimistic note, I would feel satisfied at having done my duty.” – Yash Chopra
It was indeed a sad day when news spread that one of India’s finest filmmakers, Mr. Yash Chopra, unexpectedly passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Chopra is an undisputable legend and he has crafted some of the finest commercial films the Bollywood audiences have ever feasted their eyes upon. If Satyajit Ray is considered by Indian film enthusiasts to be the supreme director when it comes to art-house cinema, Yash Chopra can be classified as the definitive director when it comes to mainstream cinema. Very seldom does Bollywood attempt a love story of people on the wrong side of forty. Therefore, the promos of Bela Sehgal directed Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi came as a breath of fresh air, promising a funny and heartwarming rom-com of two 40 plus protagonists. Unfortunately, the film could not live up to the promise.
Farhad (Boman Irani) is a 45 year old lingerie salesman who lives with his mother (Daisy Irani) and grandmother (Shammi). His unmarried status is not only the cause of his loneliness but also embarrassment in front of his Parsi family and friends. One fine day, 40 year old Shirin (Farah Khan) walks into his lingerie store and Farhad falls head over heels in love. However the path of true love is never easy, is it?

Audiences worldwide are gearing up for love, lust and lingerie, with the release of Indian cinema’s hotly anticipated, off-beat romantic comedy film of 2012, Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi, out in cinemas on 24th August, 2012.
