What do Billie Lourd, Colin Hanks, and Bette Midler have in common? The answer: They were all rather taken with Daniel Reisinger.
The charismatic Australian director (Sideswiped, Players) spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on just how he landed such an impressive cast for what is a relatively niche British rom-com. And Mrs is one of Edinburgh Film Festival‘s world premieres in its out of competition category this year.
To describe this film, penned by Melissa Bubnic, as a rom-com feels misleading; its protagonist Gemma, played by Irish actress Aisling Bea, is left bereft and blindsided when her fiancé Nathan (Hanks) drops dead months before their wedding. In a bizarre but incredibly endearing effort to honor their love and distract herself from her own grief, she sets about trying to posthumously marry him.

‘Downton Abbey’ star Lesley Nicol, who played the bustling cook Mrs Patmore in the show, said: “I just burst into tears,” when she learned of the plight of Asia’s black bears who are held in cruel conditions and farmed for their bile. Nicol saw a video of the abuse of bears 6,000 miles away in Vietnam and China she knew instantly she had to do something about it, reports mirror.co.uk.
It led to the star becoming a key ingredient in a campaign to save them – and, in typical Mrs Patmore fashion, she rounded up fellow cast members to help out too.
Now their efforts have helped save 130 Asiatic black bears caught and farmed for their bile, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine. And the power behind their success has been driven by the massive fanbase Downton Abbey has in Asia.

Hollywood actress Kim Basinger, comedian Ricky Gervais and British actor Peter Egan have joined campaigners from the Dog Meat Free Indonesia coalition in celebrating news that Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta has banned the dog and cat meat trade.
The stars sent a video message after the Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Department confirmed Jakarta now becomes the 21st jurisdiction in Indonesia to ban the trade.
The move comes in response to an intensive campaign by Dmfi, exposing the severe animal cruelty and risks to human health from zoonotic diseases such as rabies. Across Indonesia, more than one million dogs and countless cats are killed every year for meat, most of them stolen pets or strays, snatched from the streets and illegally trafficked on grueling journeys to supply demand hotspots. Many die during this ordeal from heatstroke, dehydration or injuries inflicted during capture and transport. Those who survive are...

Animals Asia has unveiled the location of its new sanctuary in Bach Ma, Vietnam, bringing them a step closer to ending the cruel, outdated and illegal practice of bear bile farming in the country.
The practice has been pushing Asiatic black bears (aka moon bears), and Malayan sun bears towards extinction in the country. To celebrate this milestone, a host of global superstars joined the organisation’s founder and CEO Jill Robinson MBE to unveil the location of their new sanctuary.
Jill Robinson MBE, has been a pioneer of animal welfare in Asia since 1985 and is widely recognised as the world’s leading expert on the cruel bear bile industry, having campaigned against it since 1993. “This is a truly historic day. We are witnessing another monumental chapter in our collaboration with the Government of Vietnam that will lead to a definitive end to bear bile farming”, Jill says. “Vietnam is...

Julie Walters (National Treasure) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) are fronting a dark, irreverent drama based around a death pact for broadcaster Channel 4.
They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.
With a core cast in their 60s and 70s, Channel 4 says the series “breaks the rules for older characters on screen and flips ageist tropes on their head in a series which promises thrilling twists and turns, irreverent humour and passionate romance.”
Walter will play Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable if boring retirement, and Peters plays Ken, a divorcee and ex-special forces vet who feels similarly at sea. The pair are childhood sweetheart who never quite managed to forget each other.

How do you say goodbye to one of the best shows on the air?
Fans of Netflix's After Life will be forced to say goodbye on January 14 when the final season launches.
The streamer has unveiled our biggest look yet at the final episodes, and it looks like Tony (Ricky Gervais) has a new outlook on life.
After spending the time following his wife's death thinking that not caring was a superpower, the trailer teases him making good decisions.
We get to see Tony on a very different mission, finding very specific places to scatter his late father's ashes.
One of those places is a bar, and well, that goes about as well as you can expect when he's caught.
Set in the small fictitious town of Tambury, the show follows Tony, a writer for the local newspaper whose life is upended after his wife dies from cancer.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has received a letter signed by 50 of Britain’s biggest stars, including Dame Judi Dench, Brian May Cbe, Leona Lewis, Gary Lineker OBE, James Arthur, Thandie Newton OBE, Alesha Dixon, Ricky Gervais, Mollie King and Dame Twiggy Lawson, urging him to implement a UK ban on the sale of real animal fur.
Animal protection organisation Humane Society International/UK which leads the #FurFreeBritain campaign in collaboration with other animal charities, is hopeful that a 2021 ban is possible now that the Brexit transition is completed.
Fur farming was banned in Britain almost two decades ago in 2003 as it was deemed too cruel. Ricky Gervais, pop star Mýa, actors Dame Judi Dench, Olivia Newton-John and Tzi Ma, and renowned conservationist Dame Jane Goodall have come together to record an impassioned video calling for a reset of humanity’s relationship with nature in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis and its zoonotic origins. However it’s two baby bears who have stolen the spotlight.

World-renowned conservationist Jane Goodall Ph.D., Dbe, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, and Un Messenger of Peace, has joined with animal protection charity Humane Society International to issue a heart-felt plea to the European Union not to overturn a ban passed last week at the Cites wildlife trade conference in Geneva that would end the capture of baby African elephants from the wild for export to zoos and circuses in China, the USA and elsewhere.
The ban was voted on and passed by the required 2/3 majority vote in Committee I of Cites largely because the EU was unable to vote due to a procedural issue (it had not yet filed its credentials). However a representative for the European Commission took to the floor to speak against the ban, and with its credentials now in order, the voting bloc of 28 looks set to oppose the decision in the plenary this week.

Music mogul Simon Cowell is supporting animal charity Humane Society International's bid to close down a dog meat farm in South Korea and rescue the more than 200 dogs and puppies caged inside who would otherwise be killed and eaten.
The dogs spend their entire lives in small, barren metal cages but Hsi, which has so far permanently closed down twelve dog meat farms and saved nearly 1,400 dogs, are desperate to close it with Simon’s help.
Eating dog meat is fast declining in popularity in South Korea particularly among younger consumers. However, thousands of dog factory farms still exist, breeding around 2.5 million dogs a year for human consumption. Humane Society International works with dog meat farmers who want to leave the dying industry, and helps them switch to more humane alternative livelihoods such as mushroom or chili growing. The charity hopes its successful model will encourage the Korean government...
