Swara Bhasker recently expressed her deep concern and solidarity after reading the findings of the Hema Committee Report, which exposed widespread harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry. The actor took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt note, where she highlighted the distressing familiarity of the report’s revelations, calling them “heartbreaking because it is familiar.” She acknowledged the male-centric and patriarchal nature of showbiz, which she believes normalizes predatory behavior and silences victims.
Swara lauded the brave efforts of the Women In Cinema Collective (Wcc) for their relentless fight against sexual harassment and violence in the industry. She praised their courage in demanding the establishment of an expert committee to examine the working conditions of women and offer solutions. Swara’s note emphasized how the industry often rewards silence and labels those who speak out as “trouble-makers,” thus perpetuating a toxic environment where power dynamics favor the perpetrators.

Ustad Rashid Khan Was The Voice Behind The Popular Song Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajana In Jab We Met ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; IMDb )
Music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan passed away on January 9, battling cancer and leaving a void in the music world forever. The voice probably echoed in each of our mornings with Jab We Met’s semi-classical beauty, Aaoge Jab Tum O Saajna. Padma Bhushan Ustad Rashid Khan belonged to the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of music, which is closely related to the Gwalior gharana.
Though Rashid Saab was a master in vilambit khayals, a style of Indian classical music, he preferred taking up tarana. Bollywood got to know him with Kisna’s song Tore Bina Mohe Chain Nahi, composed by Ar Rahman. He even sang another piece in the film Kahe Ujadi Mori Neend. However, since both were typical classical pieces, not many might remember them.

Singer Asha Bhosle, who carved out her own independent niche and ruled the roost over the world of music, turns a ripe old 90 on Friday, and notwithstanding a long and eventful musical journey of eight decades, neither her vocal cords are tired nor has she retired…
It was back way, some 80 years ago, when a petite 10-year-old girl Asha Mangeshkar earnestly stood before a studio microphone and recorded her first playback song for composer Datta S. Davjekar, ‘Chala Chala Nav Bal…’ for a Marathi film (‘Majha Bal’ – 1943).
Though it came just a year after her father Pt. Deenanath Mangeshkar’s passing (1942), Asha’s maiden number did not exactly set the film industry on fire but she continued to get humdrum singing assignments, and like her older sibling Lata Mangeshkar, continued the uphill musical sojourn.
After many Marathi songs, she finally landed a Hind film song assignment for ‘Chunariya’ (1948), and then...

Mumbai, Aug 30 (Ians) Writer K.A. Abbas did not take much notice of the nondescript-looking man accompanying Raj Kapoor to his house to hear the story for a film.
After listening quietly to the over two-hour-long rendition, this man only said that it was a good story. Is that all, asked Kapoor noticing the bemused Abbas.
“Gardish mein hoon, aasman ka taara hoon,” he then responded.
Abbas, taken aback, told Kapoor that he had spent two-and-a-half hours telling his story and his unknown visitor had perfectly summarised it in one phrase.
The “nondescript man” was Shailendra, whose 100th birth anniversary falls today (August 30). Just one film old at this meeting, he would go on to become Hindi cinema’s most exemplary, innately-gifted yet self-effacing lyricist, whose songs like “Awaara hoon”, “Mera joota hai Japani”, and “Hothon pe sachai rehti hai” that made Indian film music popular across the world.

In MemoriamSiddique and his partner Lal were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without stereotyping, at no one's expense.SiddiqueEven though Malayalam filmmaker Siddique, who passed away on August 8, is remembered along with his partner Lal for the films they wrote and directed, the two of them had begun by writing stories that others directed. They contributed to one of the most celebrated films in Malayalam, Manichitrathazhu. They were really good with situational humour and made their funniest scenes without the usual stereotyping, at anyone's expense. Later when they split ways, Siddique continued directing comedies and slipped a few into other languages too. A listicle of his films wouldn't be complete without the early films he and Lal wrote for, and without his later stints in Tamil and Hindi. Pappan Priyappetta Pappan This is the first film Siddique and Lal scripted but it was directed by Sathyan Anthikad.

TributeSiddique, who passed away on August 8, had, along with his friend Lal, made some of the most memorable comedies in Malayalam cinema through the 80s and 90s.One of the first actors to pen a tribute to filmmaker Siddique after his passing on Tuesday, August 8, was the usually withdrawn Fahadh Faasil. In a rare emotional post, he said, “You will be missed forever dear Sidhikka.” He was also among those who went to pay homage to Siddique at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Kochi on Wednesday. He, along with his father Fazil, a renowned director of the 1990s, held and hugged Lal, Siddique's closest friend in films, who stood by, crying. Siddque and Lal's names were at one time always spoken together, the two springing up with a new brand of comedies in the late 80s, writing and directing some of the most popular films in Malayalam. Lal appeared inconsolable by his friend's side,...

Georgetown (Guyana), Aug 8 (Ians) Skipper Rovman Powell’s unbeaten 19-ball 40 powered West Indies to 159/5 in 20 overs against India in the third T20I of the five-match series here at Providence Stadium on Tuesday.
After a decent start, West Indies appeared to be in control of the game. However, India made a comeback with Kuldeep Yadav taking two wickets in an over. But the hosts managed to achieve the highest score of the series, thanks to Powell’s unbeaten knock of 40 runs.
West Indies got off to a decent start with openers Kyle Mayers and Brandon King adding 30 runs in the first four overs. However, the spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel managed to rein in the run rate, and the hosts managed to add just 8 runs in the next two overs, posting 38 for no loss on the board in the powerplay.

He suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday at a hospital in Kochi, where he was admitted since July 10 due to respiratory issues. The 60-year-old filmmaker hailed from Kochi. Like many artistes of his generation, Siddique had begun his career at the mimicry troupe run by Kalabhavan, a prestigious arts centre in Kerala. With Lal, his friend and colleague at Kalabhavan, he forayed into Malayalam cinema in the latter half of the 80s, writing comedies of a new flavour with an element of melancholy in them. If comedies were mostly written as a parallel track in films until then, in Siddque and Lal’s works, they merged with the main storyline,...

Traveling towards Raichur from Bellary in Karnataka, we had a tea break at this place. The tea stall owner, a Telugu settled in Karnataka (this region was part of erstwhile Hyderabad Karnataka), was playing songs of Mukesh on his ramshackle of a tape recorder. On further enquiry, he informed that his tea stall is thronged by the nearby residents and the labourers who work in different projects and they love to hear songs of Mukesh as they identify with the kind of songs that he sung or was fortunate to sing which endeared him and continues to endear him to the proletariat of the country.

Tarouba (Trinidad), Aug 4 (Ians) India T20 skipper Hardik Pandya blamed the loss of quick wickets in the middle overs as the reason for his side falling short in the first T20I and suffering a narrow four-run defeat to West Indies in the first game of the five-match series.
After restricting the West Indies to 149/6 in their 20 overs after the hosts won the toss and elected to bat first, India seemed to have recovered from a horrendous start after losing both openers from 28 with Tilak Varma (39) taking them to 77 before Hardik Pandya (19) and Sanju Samson (12) sharing a 36-run partnership to take them to 113/4.
But India lost both Pandya and Samson at the same score of 113 within three deliveries and were eventually restricted to 145/9 in 20 overs. Pandya was bowled by Jason Holder (2-19) while Samson was run out.
Pandya said losing a couple of wickets in a row caused India’s downfall in the match.

Bridgetown, July 28 (Ians) After India thrashed West Indies by five wickets in the Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, left-arm spin all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja lauded Virat Kohli’s one-handed stunning catch to dismiss Romario Shepherd.

Bridgetown, July 28 (Ians) After beating West Indies by five wickets in a one-sided Odi series opener at Kensington Oval, India captain Rohit Sharma revealed that the reason behind rejigging the batting order in a chase of 115 was to give time to the players who haven’t played much in the last few weeks.

It would spread to Mumbai, to Goa, to the trains along the way. The eternal combination of music with films and stars, many a times their fate intertwined, with each giving a boost to the other, is considered a hallmark of Indian movies. This has been the tradition of almost all films produced in India – since the humble beginning made with “Raja Harishchandra” (1913) by the venerable Father of Indian Cinema, Dhundiraj Govind ‘Dadasaheb’ Phalke.
