Brad Pitt was instrumental in Helena Bonham Carter being cast in Fight Club. And although the film was a success, at first it didn’t seem history would be too kind to the David Fincher picture.

Fight Club became one of Carter’s most memorable films. It was a movie she credited both Pitt and her Oscar nomination for getting. She was nominated for her role in the 1997 feature The Wings of the Dove. And although she didn’t win, the nomination and her performance were enough to get Carter a lot of movie offers. Carter realized she had to snatch a film up quickly before the Oscar ceremony in case she lost.
“It was Brad’s idea for me to be in it,” Carter once told The Guardian.

Although he couldn’t make it to her baby shower, Hugh Grant is back in Bridget Jones’ life.
The Golden Globe winner will return for the upcoming fourth installment of Renée Zellweger‘s romantic comedy franchise, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, after carving out a spot for his womanizing character Daniel Cleaver.
He recently explained to Vanity Fair why he opted not to reprise the role for 2016’s Bridget Jones’s Baby. “I really couldn’t fit my character in—he just didn’t belong, so I stepped aside,” he said.
The third installment featured Zellweger’s titular character unexpectedly pregnant at 40, trying to determine whether the father is her ex Mark (Colin Firth) or handsome American stranger Jack (Patrick Dempsey). Although Grant did not return for that movie, Bridget attends a memorial for her ex, who is presumed dead after a plane crash.

While most news about Monty Python these days tends to involve bitter financial disputes and long-simmering tensions blowing up on social media, there’s at least one recent Python-centric story that’s unquestionably heartwarming. And no, we don’t mean John Cleese’s decision to quit Twitter.
There’s currently a crowdfunding campaign to raise money to pay for a statue honoring Terry Jones, which is to be erected on the promenade in Colwyn Bay, Wales where the late Monty Python member lived until he was nearly five. Jones, of course, passed away in 2020 due to complications of a rare form of dementia, which he was diagnosed with in 2015 — although his death still hasn’t stopped him from booking acting jobs.

Hugh Grant is explaining why he has been skeptical to star in some big-budget fare.
In a Vanity Fair profile published Wednesday, the actor reflected on working more in indies and television and why he rejected a few roles in major Hollywood studio films.
“I’ve turned down a few that I thought were insufficient in quality or independence allowed to the filmmakers — you felt like a big corporation [was] breathing down the neck of these filmmakers, and I don’t want to make that decision,” he said.
As for how he could tell, Grant explained, “I asked them bluntly. I quizzed the directors. You can tell quite early on, since you might have a few ideas about the part before you’ve signed up — you suggest things, and you can tell if there’s a lot of pushback from noncreative executives.”
An exception was the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,...

Johnny Depp once collaborated alongside Helena Bonham Carter in the Tim Burton feature Sweeney Todd. But one sequence required Carter to get a bit too close with her co-star. And it seemed to bother Carter more than it bothered Burton.

Carter played Depp’s accomplice in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Although Carter and Burton were married at the time, Burton was skeptical about casting his significant other in the film. Sweeney Todd was a dark musical, and Burton wasn’t convinced Carter had the voice to pull off her character’s melodies. Still, she gave his wife an opportunity like he would any other actor, refusing special treatment.

Until the 2024 Emmy nominations were announced, the last time an Oscar-winning actress had earned TV academy recognition for a guest appearance on a comedy series was 2019, when Emma Thompson (“Saturday Night Live”) battled eventual victor Jane Lynch (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). Among those in the running for the next Best Comedy Guest Actress trophy are Academy Award recipients Olivia Colman (“The Bear”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Bear”), and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“Only Murders in the Building”), all of whom further stand out from their remaining three competitors in that they are new to the category.
Said three Oscar winners are faced with the daunting challenge of defeating Emmy darling Maya Rudolph, who is seeking her third guest victory for “Saturday Night Live” following triumphs in 2020 and 2021. Also in the mix are veteran nominees Kaitlin Olson (“Hacks”) and Kristen Wiig (“Saturday Night Live”), the latter of whom lost to Rudolph three years ago.

What is your favorite Sherman Brothers song from the endearing 1964 Walt Disney musical fantasy “Mary Poppins”? Perhaps it’s Robert B. and Richard M’s peppy “Spoonful of Sugar.” Or the Oscar-winning “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and tongue-twisting “”Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” It’s no secret that Disney himself loved the haunting “Feed the Birds.” Disney would often summon Richard M. to his office to play the ballad. “It’s about a lot more than birdseed for birds,” Sherman told me in a 2018 L.A. Times interview. “The song is about the simple act of giving. He’d just say, ‘Play it for me.’ And I’d sing and play it for him, and he’d say ‘Yep, that’s what it’s all about.”’
And it seems that even decades after his death in 1966, it was still what it was all about for Disney. Back in 2015, the studio unveiled the restoration of Disney’s office on the Burbank lot.

Helena Bonham Carter is a name synonymous with eccentricity, bold outfits, and a penchant for quirky roles. But her personal life, too, has been no less dramatic, filled with its own twists and turns. One particularly colorful chapter began in 1994 when she became romantically involved with Kenneth Branagh on the set of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

But wait…this was a classic love triangle. Well, Branagh was still married to Emma Thompson at the time. The affair concluded not only in significant emotional upheaval for the Harry Potter actress but ultimately led to the end of her marriage in 1995.
Thompson, however, being the high road-taker extraordinaire, later stated in a 2013 interview that she’s no longer interested in revisiting old conflicts as she made peace with Bonham Carter long ago.

Aging is a sensitive issue in the entertainment industry, since actors have to be preened continuously to appear as ‘perfect’ onscreen. Hiding natural age-lines and enhancing one’s appearance with the use of new scientific developments is a normal occurrence now.
But there are actors who do not mind other’s opinions of their bodies, mainly actresses are the one harassed to ‘hide their age’. The Titanic actress Kate Winslet belongs to the circle of seasoned Hollywood ladies who refuse to ‘get work done’. The actress is quite vocal about her view on body positivity and fans have applauded her bravery.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph has already had a great 2024. The performer won an Oscar on her first nomination — taking home the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Alexander Payne‘s “The Holdovers.” However, her year just got even better with an Emmy nomination on the cards for her guest role in Hulu’s comedy series “Only Murders in the Building.” Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, the comedy series follows Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three occupants of a New York City apartment building who are drawn into solving murders due to their love of true crime. The first season was so popular that two more seasons quickly followed, along with a host of A-list actors joining the cast including Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd.

The film collaborations of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory were so successful that “Merchant Ivory” became synonymous not just with the name of their production company but an entire style, if not genre, of filmmaking: Well-mounted period dramas of sophistication, taste, and erudition that come across today as light-years more refined than “Downton Abbey” or other costume dramas created in the wake of their popularity.
Stephen Soucy pays tribute to this remarkable collaboration and what made the films of Merchant Ivory so distinctive and unreplicatable in his new documentary of the same name, “Merchant Ivory,” the trailer for which IndieWire is exclusively debuting below. The documentary appeared at Doc NYC 2023 and was an official selection of the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Sarasota Film Festival earlier this year. It features commentary from Emma Thompson, Vanessa Redgrave, and others, including Ivory himself, now 96 years old, and the oldest Oscar winner ever,...

The release of Deadpool & Wolverine has clearly made a huge splash, both at the box office and in the realm of social media interactions. The film’s impressive earnings and record-breaking opening weekend underscore its massive appeal and the anticipation that surrounded its release.
Jennifer Garner makes a surprise comeback as Elektra and jokes about her divorce with Ben Affleck in Deadpool and Wolverine
Marvel’s playful nod to the iconic sad Wolverine meme, with Hugh Jackman’s character in full gear, is a clever way to celebrate the film’s success. By recreating the 1993 animated series moment, Marvel taps into nostalgia while giving it a contemporary twist, acknowledging the movie’s status as “#1 in the world.” This kind of fan-centric, humorous engagement is a hallmark of Marvel’s marketing strategy.

Netflix is dropping a new show this summer that takes a classic old story and spins it into something fresh. “The Decameron” premieres on July 25th, and it’s blending history with modern storytelling in a really cool way.
The show is based on a famous book from the 1400s by an Italian dude named Giovanni Boccaccio. His book, also called “The Decameron,” follows a group of fancy nobles escaping from a nasty plague by telling each other stories for 10 days. This plague, called the Black Death, was sweeping through Italy and everybody was super scared. So these nobles hole up in a nice country house to avoid getting sick.
While there, they pass the time by picking a king or queen each night who gets to pick a theme for the stories. Over the next few hours, each noble has to spin a yarn that fits the theme. Boccaccio...

It was July 1994. The summer was sizzling. And so were cinemas. That’s truly no lie.

Before the age of Primetime Emmy Awards sweeps for comedy “Schitt’s Creek” and drama “The Crown” – a trend that could very well continue this year by either “The Bear” or “Shōgun” – there was “Angels in America.” The HBO miniseries adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Tony Kushner won 11 Emmys back in 2004 and famously took home the prizes in all seven top categories, making it the very first program to do so. This year’s 76th annual ceremony marks the 20th anniversary of the show’s historic night. To celebrate Kushner’s birthday on July 16, let’s flashback to that epic Emmys sweep.

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Speed, Once Were Warriors, and Ang Lee...

Tosin Cole has already been part of two of the best-known sci-fi franchises around.
Sure, the American-born British actor admits his turn as starfighter pilot Lieutenant Bastian in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” was perhaps a little “blink-and-you’ll miss it” (although it could have been a lot more — he got down to the final few auditioning for John Boyega’s role of Finn but “it just didn’t work out” and J.J. Abrams offered him this part instead). But in BBC cult series “Doctor Who,” however, across seasons 11 and 12, he played the main character of Ryan Sinclair, companion to Jodie Whittaker’s Time Lord. It all gives him some solid bragging rights.
“You know, I can tell my grandkids, ‘Your granddaddy was in this show!,’” he exclaims.
But now there’s another sci-fi that he hopes could also become something to tell the grandchildren about in years to come.

“The Great Lillian Hall” reunites three “American Horror Story” actresses to deliver a tour de force in TV movies. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Lily Rabe all star in this HBO TV Movie, directed by Michael Cristofer, that follows the careers of fictional Broadway actress Lillian Hall.
It’s Lange who plays Lillian and the veteran actress has turned in another masterclass in acting. She has always been a commanding screen presence and that doesn’t change here as she depicts a legendary actress as a triumph on stage but a nervous wreck in rehearsals while she battles with early dementia. It’s always a treat watching icons play icons (Lange did this again in “Feud: Bette and Joan”) and while Lillian is fictional, the impact is no less felt. Critics agree, this could be Lange’s greatest performance yet.
