UPDATED:

After a successful inaugural run last summer, the Virginia Queer Film Festival at Old Dominion University is back.

The three-day festival starts Friday and features 40 original films from six countries by or about members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Friday’s films and events will be held at the University Theatre, 4600 Hampton Blvd. On Saturday and Sunday, films will be screened at the Michael and Kimthanh Lê Planetarium, 4501 Elkhorn Ave.

The entries cover a gamut of topics and themes, including the dystopian film “Safety State,” in which a gay and lesbian couple team up to flee the Midwest, and “In the Summer Rain,” in which a high school senior falls in love with a pastor’s daughter.
