A 16-year-old boy driving a stolen car has died after he crashed it after a police pursuit Friday morning on the West Side, according to police.

The incident happened about 9:55 a.m. in the 4500 block of West Kinzie Street when Harrison District police officers tried to stop a car that was reported stolen, but it sped away, police said.

Officers gave chase briefly but lost sight of the car. While investigating the area, police learned the car had been in a traffic crash nearby at Kilborn Avenue and Kinzie Street and the driver, a 16-year-old boy, was taken to Loretto Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office said the boy was pronounced dead at 10:25 a.m. Friday, but his name was not immediately released. The boy died from multiple injuries suffered in the crash, the office determined following an autopsy Saturday.

A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the stolen car was arrested and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was later charged with one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a vehicle, police said.

A woman driving a car that collided with the vehicle the boys were in declined medical attention.
