Lake County programs that provide emergency food and housing are set to receive more than $300,000 in federal dollars, a local non-profit said.

A local board made up of representatives from several charitable and governmental groups will determine how the $321,381 awarded by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency will be allocated, according to a news release from the United Way of Lake County.

Public and private agencies that would like to be considered for the funding must apply by 5 p.m. Aug. 10. An application meeting is scheduled for 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the United Way of Lake County, 330 S. Greenleaf St. in Gurnee.

Those planning on attending are asked to register by emailing Deanna.Olmem@uwlakeco.org.

In order to qualify, agencies must be private non-profits or units of government, eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination and have the ability to deliver emergency food or shelter programs. Non-profits must also have voluntary oversight boards.

In the past, funds have been distributed to organizations like A Safe Place, Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Lake County Housing Consortium managed by Catholic Charities Lake County Services, Maristella, Most Blessed Trinity and PADS Lake County.
