  • Maple Leafs' Bobby McMann: Skates Thursday

McMann (knee) took part in Thursday's practice, per Jonas Siegel of The Athletic.

McMann skated on the third line alongside John Tavares and Nicholas Robertson. That trio might start the campaign together, provided McMann is healthy. The 28-year-old McMann missed Toronto's final two regular-season games and all seven playoff contests due to an MCL sprain.

  • Maple Leafs' Max Domi: Starting camp as wingman

Domi will open camp on the wing, reports Arun Srinivasan of The Leafs Nation. Last season, he played his best hockey on the wing, not center.

Domi's game stumbled early while he was down the lineup as a pivot. But it took off when Mitch Marner went down with an ankle injury and Domi stepped onto a line 5v5 with Auston Matthews. Domi finished 17th in the NHL in assists (37). Expect another strong season if Domi can stick in a top-six role.

  • Maple Leafs' William Nylander: Starting camp at center

Nylander will start training camp at center, reports Arun Srinivasan of The Leafs Nation on Wednesday

No surprise here, really. New coach Craig Berube knows that John Tavares will be best served on the third line, and Nylander is a talented player who's willing to take on any challenge. The Leafs have tried Nylander down the middle before, and the experiments never lasted more than a few games because of Willie's defensive challenges. If successful, the Leafs would be able to spread its offense across three lines, making it even harder for opponents to defend their elite talent.

  • Maple Leafs' Topi Niemela: Impressive at rookie camp

Niemela delivered five assists in two rookie-camp games against the Canadiens last weekend.

Niemala stood out as one of the Leafs' best players. He ran the top power-play unit and very effectively got the puck on the net low in order to produce rebounds for his teammates. Niemala was originally drafted because of his strong defensive instincts and smarts, but he has shown real growth in his offensive game. The Leafs' blue line is suddenly tight with so many offseason acquisitions, so Niemala may end up back in the AHL for more consistent ice time.

  • Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner: Focused on season, not new contract

Marner, who is in the last year of his current deal, declined to discuss contract at Wednesday's season-opening media availability, reports Sportsnet.ca.

"I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the season and getting going," said Marner. Despite putting up gaudy numbers in eight seasons in Toronto (639 points in 576 games, including 85 in 69 in 2023-24), he and Leafs have not seen playoff success, and Marner has borne the brunt of fan ire as a result. At times in the past, the pressure seemed to get to the hometown kid, but Marner enters camp focused and poised for a massive contract season after prepping for the season by working out with Hart-trophy winners Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon. MacKinnon has been quick to share that Marner "stuck out as one of the best" during the workouts. His first century season could be on the horizon.

  • Maple Leafs' Easton Cowan: Coach impressed with effort

Cowan has impressed Leafs general manager, Brad Treliving, during rookie camp, reports the Toronto Sun on Wednesday.

Cowan produced 34 goals and 62 assists in 54 regular-season games last season with OHL London, and he followed it up with 10 goals and 24 assists in 18 playoff contests. He's already shown he can stand out with two strong rookie games versus the Habs freshmen. Cowan is fast with intense compete, and he doesn't cut corners in his own zone. Still, Treliving is a tough customer and doesn't mince words: "He has produced in junior and the one thing watching the rookie games, this guy works. Having said that, he needs to be detailed... He needs to show us that he doesn't [still have junior habits]." Cowan will compete for a bottom-six role in training camp and could get a nine-game audition with the big club. Or stay, depending on his game. He remains eligible to return to the OHL for 2024-25.

  • Maple Leafs' Ben Danford: Dealing with concussion

Danford is recovering from a concussion, general manager Brad Treliving told Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun on Wednesday.

It was previously reported that Danford sustained a head injury Thursday, but we now know that it was a concussion specifically. The 18-year-old defenseman had a goal and 33 points in 64 regular-season contests with OHL Oshawa in 2023-24. Although Danford's expected to return to the OHL for the 2024-25 campaign, he might see action with the Leafs during the preseason if he recovers in time.

  • Maple Leafs' Connor Dewar: Still without timeline

Dewar (shoulder) remains out indefinitely following offseason shoulder surgery, though he hasn't suffered any setbacks, Dave McCarthy of NHL.com reports Wednesday.

Dewar seems on track to start the season on injured reserve, possibly even LTIR depending on his recovery. After being acquired from the Wild last year, the 25-year-old center played in 17 games for the Leafs in which he notched one goal, four assists and 29 hits while averaging 12:54 of ice time. Dewar's absence could open the door for Max Pacioretty to turn his PTO into a full contract during training camp.

  • Maple Leafs' Fraser Minten: Dealing with high-ankle sprain

Minten is facing weeks on the sideline due to a high-ankle sprain, Joshua Kloke of The Athletic reports Wednesday.

Minten was a long shot to make the Opening Night roster even prior to getting hurt, but now he almost certainly won't be with the team when it faces the Canadiens on Oct. 9. The 20-year-old winger racked up 48 points in 43 WHL contests with Kamploops and Saskatoon last year, the type of offensive display that saw him drafted 38th overall by Toronto in the 2022 NHL Draft. Look for Minten to start the season in the minors with the Marlies once given the all-clear.

  • Maple Leafs' Jon Gillies: Agrees to professional tryout

Gillies signed a professional tryout agreement with Toronto on Tuesday.

Gillies has compiled a record of 8-16-3 with a 3.39 GAA and an .891 save percentage in 35 career NHL appearances for Calgary, St. Louis, New Jersey and Columbus. He will get a look during training camp, but securing a contract could be difficult after he didn't see any playing time during the 2023-24 season.

  • Maple Leafs' Fraser Minten: Hurts leg in prospects game

Minten sustained a leg injury in Toronto's prospects game versus Montreal on Sunday, Lance Hornby of The Toronto Sun reports.

Minten was shaken up and ultimately had to exit the contest after taking a hit from Montreal's David Reinbacher. Minten will be evaluated when he returns to Toronto, and the team is hopeful that he will be ready for training camp. The 20-year-old center is battling for a roster spot on the Maple Leafs after appearing in four regular-season outings with the big club in 2023-24. An update on Minten's status should become available before Toronto's Sept. 22 preseason opener against Ottawa.

  • Maple Leafs' Ben Danford: Suffers head injury Thursday

Danford suffered an apparent head injury Thursday and is not on the ice at practice Friday, according to David Alter of The Hockey News.

The Maple Leafs' first-round pick -- 31st overall -- in the 2024 Draft, Danford was hit in practice and needed to be helped off the ice. Danford had a goal and 32 assists in 64 regular-season games with OHL Oshawa last season and will be returned to the OHL level at some point during training camp once he regains his health.

  • Maple Leafs' Jani Hakanpaa: Inks one-year deal

Hakanpaa (knee) signed a one-year, $1.47 million contract with Toronto on Wednesday.

Hakanpaa had reportedly secured a two-year deal back in July but that contract was never officially announced by the team, leading to speculation regarding the severity of his knee issue. It seems the two sides were finally able to come to an agreement on a one-year deal instead. The blue line in Toronto is pretty packed, from veteran Oliver Ekman-Larsson to youngster Conor Timmins. As such, Hakanpaa is far from a lock to suit up for Opening Night against Montreal on Oct. 9.

  • Maple Leafs' Max Pacioretty: Agrees to tryout

Pacioretty signed a professional tryout agreement with Toronto on Wednesday.

Pacioretty was limited to just 47 regular-season games with the Capitals last season, recording four goals and 19 assists. If he can make the roster coming out of camp, the veteran winger could be an option with the man advantage, having notched 11 of his 23 points in that role last year. In addition, if Pacioretty can prove he is healthy, he could challenge the likes of Matthew Knies or Bobby McMann (knee) for a top-six role.

  • Maple Leafs' Nicholas Robertson: Pens one-year deal

Robertson agreed to terms on a one-year, $875,000 contract with Toronto on Tuesday.

Robertson had reportedly submitted a trade request as a restricted free agent this offseason, but it seems the two sides have come to an agreement on a short-term deal. It's still possible the Leafs will move the 22-year-old winger before the start of the season or perhaps ahead of the trade deadline. For now, the California native figures to slot into a bottom-six role but could challenge for more opportunities as the season goes along.

  • Maple Leafs' Marshall Rifai: Signs two-year extension

Rifai signed a two-year, $1.55 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs on Thursday.

Rifai made his NHL debut in 2023-24, playing a pair of regular-season games with the Maple Leafs. The 26-year-old defenseman spent most of the season with AHL Toronto, scoring twice while adding 17 assists in 57 contests. He exploded in the playoffs with three goals and an assist in four games. Rafai is currently a depth defenseman in the Maple Leafs' organization, and he would need an injury or two to crack the lineup.

  • Maple Leafs' Steven Lorentz: Trying out for Toronto

Lorentz signed a professional tryout agreement with the Maple Leafs on Tuesday, according to Max Miller of The Hockey News.

After speculation that Lorentz would sign a PTO with Toronto on Tuesday, it is now official. Lorentz will look to occupy a spot in Toronto's bottom six, and he'll be a candidate to kill penalties if he makes the team. The 28-year-old forward registered just three points in 38 regular-season appearances in 2023-24, but he did manage to score twice and add an assist in 16 postseason outings with Florida en route to winning the Stanley Cup.

  • Maple Leafs' Alex Steeves: Inks one-year contract

Steeves signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.

Steeves played one regular-season NHL game in 2023-24, picking up six hits in 10:14 of ice time. The 24-year-old had a big campaign with AHL Toronto last season, scoring 27 times while adding 30 assists in 65 appearances. He will battle for a spot on the fourth line in training camp, but he is likely headed back to the minors to start the 2024-25 season.

  • Maple Leafs' Ben Danford: Signs entry-level contract

Danford inked a three-year, entry-level contract with the Maple Leafs on Friday.

Toronto selected Danford in the first round -- 31st overall -- in the 2024 Draft. He amassed a goal and 32 assists in 64 regular-season games with OHL Oshawa in 2023-24 and turned it up in the playoffs with four goals and 10 points in 21 contests. Danford is expected to spend another two seasons in junior hockey before he starts his professional career -- likely at the AHL level.

  • Maple Leafs' Connor Dewar: Grabs one-year deal

Dewar (shoulder) inked a one-year, $1.18 million contract with Toronto on Tuesday.

Dewar suited up in 17 regular-season contests for the Leafs in 2023-24 after he was acquired via trade. In those outings, the 25-year-old center notched one goal, four assists and 20 shots while averaging 12:54 of ice time. Although the Manitoba native is expected to recover in time for training camp from his shoulder injury, he probably won't offer more than mid-range fantasy value, at best, given his lack of power-play minutes and bottom-six role.
