  • Penguins' Matt Nieto: Considered month-to-month

Nieto (knee) is considered to be month-to-month, per Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Wednesday.

Nieto is likely to begin the season on the long-term injured reserve list but that hasn't officially happened yet. He had a goal and four points in 22 contests with the Penguins in 2023-24. When he's healthy, Nieto will probably serve in a bottom-six capacity.

  • Penguins' Erik Karlsson: Day-to-day to open camp

Karlsson was labeled day-to-day with an upper-body injury on the first day of Penguins' training camp Wednesday, Michelle Crechiolo of the Penguins' official site reports.

Karlsson was no doubt hoping for a bounce-back year after managing just 56 points last season, well off his Norris Trophy pace the year prior in which he racked up 101 points. The addition of coach David Quinn is expected to unlock Karlsson's potential, though that's far from guaranteed. In regard to his injury, the fact that the team classified it as day-to-day should be an indication that Karlsson will be ready for Opening Night against the Rangers on Oct. 9 even if he does miss some preseason action.

  • Penguins' Taylor Gauthier: Dealing with injury ahead of camp

Gauthier was listed among the Penguins' injured players Tuesday.

Gauthier wasn't going to be making the Penguins' Opening Night roster even without his undisclosed injury, so this news should have little impact on fantasy players. Still, the 23-year-old backstop may be one to watch for dynasty managers after he went 24-16-2 in 42 games for ECHL Wheeling last season while recording a 2.23 GAA and a .923 save percentage.

  • Penguins' John Ludvig: Good to go

Ludvig (wrist) will be ready for the beginning of training camp, the team announced Tuesday.

Ludvig accounted for three goals, five points, 47 PIM, 72 hits and 33 blocked shots in 33 regular-season appearances in 2023-24. He will compete for a depth spot on the blue line of the Penguins after undergoing wrist surgery in late April.

  • Penguins' Kris Letang: Set for 2024-25 campaign

Letang (finger) has been cleared for training camp, per Pittsburgh's training camp roster Tuesday.

Letang didn't let his finger injury stop him from playing in all 82 games last year in which he generated 10 goals and 41 assists. With the addition of Erik Karlsson, the 37-year-old Letang recorded a meager five power-play points, tied for his lowest total with the man advantage for his career with the exception of 2006-07 when he appeared in just seven contests. Assuming Pittsburgh's power play improves this season -- it would be hard-pressed to get worse -- Letang should inherently see his scoring productivity creep back up this year.

  • Penguins' Tanner Howe: Set for camp

Howe (face) will be available for the start of training camp Wednesday.

According to the Penguins on Tuesday, Howe is healthy after missing the 2024 Prospects Challenge due to a facial injury. The 18-year-old Howe accumulated 28 goals and 77 points in 68 regular-season outings for WHL Regina in 2023-24. He will likely be returned to the junior ranks after getting a look with the Penguins during camp.

  • Penguins' Emil Bemstrom: Ready to rock

Bemstrom (concussion) will be good to go for the start of training camp, the team announced Tuesday.

Bemstrom registered eight goals and eight assists in 56 games between Columbus and Pittsburgh before sitting out the Penguins' regular-season finale. With a clean bill of health, he will compete for a bottom-six spot with the team during camp.

  • Penguins' Ryan Graves: Deemed fit ahead of camp

Graves (concussion) was listed as healthy on the Penguins' training camp roster Tuesday.

Graves faced the ire of Penguins fans last season after he managed just 14 points in 70 contests despite his $4.5 million cap hit and a contract that runs through the 2028-29 campaign. If he continues to struggle this year, he could find himself relegated to the press box in favor of Sebastian Aho, Ryan Shea or Owen Pickering.

  • Penguins' Noel Acciari: Ready for training camp

Acciari (lower body) will be good to go for the start of training camp, per the Penguins' roster release Tuesday.

Acciari reportedly would have been ready to play in the postseason had the Penguins qualified, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he was deemed healthy before the start of camp. The team added a wealth of depth forwards in the offseason, meaning Acciari is far from a lock for the lineup on a nightly basis and will have to hold off the likes of Anthony Beauvillier and Valtteri Puustinen, to name a few, for a bottom-six role.

  • Penguins' Sidney Crosby: Inks two-year extension

Crosby signed a two-year, $17.4 million contract extension with Pittsburgh on Monday.

Crosby is heading into the final season of the 12-year, $104.4 million deal that he signed back in June 2012, and his extension will keep him around in Pittsburgh for two additional seasons. The 37-year-old was thought to be in pursuit of a pay raise for his next deal, but his extension will contain the same $8.7 million annual average value as his previous 12-year contract, allowing the notoriously superstitious Crosby to continue matching his cap hit with his iconic No. 87 for two more years. After reaching the 90-point threshold both of the past two seasons, Crosby's deal represents a significant discount that should provide the Penguins with plenty of cap flexibility into the future.

  • Penguins' Tanner Howe: Dealing with facial injury

Howe sustained a facial injury that will sideline him for Pittsburgh's prospect challenge, Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports Wednesday.

Howe was a long shot to make the Penguins' roster coming out of training camp, so this injury is unlikely to have a significant impact on his fantasy value. Selected by Pittsburgh with the 46th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, the 18-year-old winger figures to return to juniors to play for WHL Regina, where he racked up 28 goals and 49 assists last year.

  • Penguins' Rutger McGroarty: Signs with Pittsburgh

McGroarty signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins on Thursday after being acquired from the Jets earlier in the day.

Following speculation that McGroarty would sign an ELC on Thursday, it is now official. McGroarty will be a youthful addition to a veteran-laden team that is trying to make a Stanley Cup run before eventually having to rebuild the roster. The likes of veterans Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang should help the youngster transition to his new club more seamlessly. McGroarty will likely slot into a middle-six role with Pittsburgh. The 20-year-old is coming off his final season at Michigan, where he notched 52 points in 36 contests.

  • Penguins' Rutger McGroarty: Flipped for another prospect

McGroarty was traded to the Penguins by the Jets on Thursday in a swap for Brayden Yager, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

McGroarty is arguably the more NHL-ready prospect of the two, which likely factored into Pittsburgh's decision, but it still comes as a bit of a surprise that the team was willing to move a player in Yager, who was arguably the Pens' top prospect. Initial reports per PuckPedia indicate that McGroarty will forgo his junior season at the University of Michigan in favor of signing an entry-level deal with his new team.

  • Penguins' Nikolai Knyzhov: Inks PTO

Knyzhov will join the Penguins on a professional tryout, the team announced Thursday.

Knyzhov was bought out of his contract by the Sharks in June with a year remaining on that deal. Over the course of the last two seasons, the 26-year-old blueliner saw action in just 22 NHL contests, registering one goal, one assist and 16 shots to go with 24 hits and 33 blocks. At this point, Knyzhov likely faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the Penguins' lineup and figures to have to edge out the likes of Sebastian Aho, Ryan Shea and youngster Owen Pickering.

  • Penguins' Cody Glass: Acquired in trade

Pittsburgh acquired Glass, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round selection from Nashville on Tuesday in exchange for Jordan Frasca.

Glass accounted for 14 goals and 35 points in 72 regular-season games during the 2022-23 campaign, but he had trouble staying in the lineup in 2023-24. In 41 appearances last season, he supplied six tallies and 13 points. Glass also didn't see any action during the 2024 playoffs. The 25-year-old forward will get a fresh start in Pittsburgh. Glass will compete for a bottom-six role during training camp.

  • Penguins' Sergei Murashov: Headed for North America

Murashov secured a three-year, entry-level deal with Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Murashov logged just six games in the KHL last season, posting a 3-1-2 record, .925 save percentage and 1.84 GAA. He spent the bulk of the campaign with the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv junior club in the MHL, for which he racked up 24 wins in 34 appearances. Selected by the Penguins in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Draft, Murashov figures to link up with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this upcoming season

  • Penguins' Brayden Yager: Agrees to entry-level contract

Yager signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins on Thursday.

Yager was taken by Pittsburgh with the 14th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The 19-year-old scored 35 goals and 95 points in 57 regular-season contests with WHL Moose Jaw in 2023-24. He then provided another 11 goals and 27 points across 20 playoff contests to help the Warriors win the WHL's championship.

  • Penguins' Harrison Brunicke: Puts pen to paper

Brunicke signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins on Thursday.

Brunicke was selected 44th overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He had 21 points in 49 games with WHL Kamloops last season, and he's likely to return to that club for another year of junior hockey. The 18-year-old defenseman will likely require a couple more years of development, especially offensively, before he might be considered a factor at the NHL level.

  • Penguins' Tanner Howe: Signs entry-level deal

Howe signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins on Wednesday.

Howe was selected 46th overall in last month's draft. He is expected to continue his junior career with WHL Regina in 2024-25, where he had 28 goals and 77 points in 68 contests as the team's captain last season, though that was down slightly from his 36-goal, 85-point 2022-23 campaign.

  • Penguins' Corey Andonovski: Pens one-year deal

Andronovski signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Penguins on Friday, Seth Rorabaugh of Tribune-Review Sports reports.

Andronovski was called up briefly in October, but he was a healthy scratch in his lone game. Andronovski had seven goals and 30 points in 63 AHL games last season. He is expected to play next season in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, barring a slew of injuries to Penguins' forwards.
