  • Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Has appendix surgery

Guhle underwent appendix surgery Wednesday and will be re-evaluated in seven days, according to RDS.ca.

This could be a bit of a blow to the Canadiens blue line, if Guhle has to miss some time during the regular season. The 22-year-old defenseman had six goals, 22 points, 178 blocked shots and 116 hits in 70 regular-season games in 2023-24. He is expected to be a top-pairing rearguard this season alongside Mike Matheson.

  • Canadiens' Michael Pezzetta: Set for training camp

Pezzetta (upper body) is expected to be fully fit ahead of training camp, Eric Engels of Sportsnet reports Monday.

Pezzetta suited up in 61 games for the Canadiens last season in which he tallied three goals and nine helpers while dishing out 242 hits and 29 blocked shots. Despite not playing in a full 82 games, the gritty center still finished in the top 10 in the NHL in hits. Given his limited offensive upside, Pezzetta won't be much of a target in most fantasy formats but could certainly offer some value in banger formats.

  • Canadiens' Kirby Dach: Skating with team

Dach (knee) was on the ice for Monday's informal skate ahead of the start of training camp.

Dach missed nearly the entire 2023-24 campaign due to his knee injury, having logged just two games with the club last year in which he generated two assists, three shots on goal and three hits. Heading into the upcoming campaign, the 23-year-old center should be expected to take the next step in his development and build upon his 2022-23 season after putting up 14 goals and 24 assists during that campaign. Set for a top-six role, Dach should benefit by playing with offseason acquisition Patrik Laine.

  • Canadiens' Arber Xhekaj: Back on ice

Xhekaj (shoulder) is skating with his Canadiens teammates ahead of training camp, per Luc Gelinas of RDS on Wednesday.

Xhekaj missed the final seven regular-season contests in 2023-24, but he's slated to be ready for the upcoming campaign. The 23-year-old defenseman had three goals, 10 points, 81 PIM and 125 hits across 44 outings last year.

  • Canadiens' Patrik Laine: Skating with new team

Laine (collarbone) hit the ice with his new teammates ahead of training camp, Luc Gelinas of RDS reports Wednesday.

Laine was acquired by the Canadiens from Columbus in a mid-August trade that saw Jordan Harris headed the other way. Between his collarbone injury and time in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, the 26-year-old Laine was limited to just 18 games last season. When he was healthy, the Finn was fairly productive, registering six goals on 41 shots and three assists, including two power-play points. He figures to take on a top-six role with Montreal and should see plenty of opportunities with the No. 1 power-play unit.

  • Canadiens' Patrik Laine: Obtained in trade

Montreal acquired Laine (collarbone) and a 2026 second-round pick from Columbus on Monday in exchange for Jordan Harris.

Laine generated six goals, nine points, 41 shots on net and 14 blocked shots across 18 regular-season appearances with the Blue Jackets in 2023-24. He has been cleared to return from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program but is still recovering from a clavicle fracture he sustained against Toronto on Dec. 14. If he is good to go for the beginning of 2024-25, Laine could return to the 50-point plateau with the Canadiens while playing in the top six and seeing time on the power play.

  • Canadiens' Kaiden Guhle: Pens six-year deal

Guhle inked a six-year, $33.3 million contract with Montreal on Wednesday.

Guhle put together a solid 2023-24 campaign for the Habs in which he set new personal bests in games played (70), goals (six), assists (16) and hits (116). While the young blueliner can offer decent fantasy value in certain formats that value hits and blocks, his offensive upside is limited -- in part due to his lack of power-play ice time. Still, Guhle figures to continue logging big minutes in 2024-25 while serving on the top pairing with Mike Matheson.

  • Canadiens' Justin Barron: Signs two-year contract

Barron signed a two-year, $2.3 million contract with Montreal on Tuesday.

Barron accounted for seven goals, 13 points, 60 shots on net, 59 blocked shots and 61 hits across 48 regular-season contests with the Canadiens in 2023-24. He also had two tallies and 11 points in 32 regular-season outings with AHL Laval last campaign. The 22-year-old blueliner will compete for a depth spot on Montreal's roster during training camp.

  • Canadiens' Arber Xhekaj: Inks two-year deal

Xhekaj (shoulder) signed a two-year, $2.6 million contract with Montreal on Tuesday.

Xhekaj was limited to just 44 NHL games last season, in part due to his shoulder problem, but could be in the mix for a full-time lineup spot this upcoming campaign. Still, even if the blueliner does make the Opening Night roster, he is far from a lock for playing time and could find himself periodically sitting in the press box as a healthy scratch. He'll need to stave off the likes of Justin Barron to maintain a spot on the third pairing.

  • Canadiens' Rafael Harvey-Pinard: Suffers broken leg

Harvey-Pinard suffered a broken leg that required surgery Thursday and will be sidelined for at least four months.

Harvey-Pinard will miss training camp and at least the first month of the season due to the injury. The 25-year-old was slated to see bottom-six minutes in 2024-25 before suffering the broken leg. He will likely be replaced on the fourth unit by Joshua Roy. Harvey-Pinard had 14 goals and 20 points in 34 games during the 2022-23 campaign, but he slumped last season, scoring only twice while adding eight assists in 45 regular-season appearances.

  • Canadiens' Juraj Slafkovsky: Signs eight-year extension

Slafkovsky signed an eight-year, $60.8 million contract extension with Montreal on Monday.

Slafkovsky still has one more season left on his entry-level deal before his new contract makes him much richer. The 20-year-old forward made plenty of progress in 2023-24, generating 20 goals and 50 points in 82 regular-season games. After all, Slafkovsky only had four tallies and 10 points in 39 appearances during his rookie campaign in 2022-23. He should see time on the top line and the first power-play unit in the upcoming season.

  • Canadiens' Alex Barre-Boulet: Gets one-year deal

Barre-Boulet signed a one-year contract with the Canadiens on Monday.

The full financial details of Barre-Boulet's agreement weren't disclosed, but it's a one-way deal, so the 27-year-old will make the same amount regardless of whether he plays in the AHL or NHL. He had six goals and nine points across 36 regular-season outings with Tampa Bay in 2023-24. The Quebec native also provided four goals and 19 points in 23 regular-season appearances with AHL Syracuse. Barre-Boulet might make Montreal's roster out of training camp, but he'll probably be a frequent healthy scratch.

  • Canadiens' Logan Sawyer: Nabbed by Habs in Round 3

Sawyer was the 78th overall pick by the Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.

Playing in the BCHL for a Brooks Bandits team that produced Cale Makar once upon a time, Sawyer had nine goals and 19 points in 20 games last campaign. He added seven goals and 15 points in a dozen playoff contests. Sawyer's game lacks pace, but he has legitimate offensive abilities. His next challenge will be to produce at a higher level. Sawyer is a 2025-26 commit to Providence College.

  • Canadiens' Aatos Koivu: Legacy pick for Canadiens

Koivu was the 70th overall pick by the Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.

You couldn't have written a better story. If the name looks familiar, yes, Aatos is the son of former longtime Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu. Koivu spent the majority of the year in the Finnish Jr. league (16 goals, 31 points in 28 games), but also got into three games with TPS' top team, no small feat for a kid who turned just 18 years of age a few days before the draft. Like his father, Koivu is a responsible two-way center with some size (6-foot-1, 175 pounds) and a big shot. Saku was playing NHL games for Montreal at age 21. Don't expect Aatos to follow a similar career path, but he makes for a nice depth acquisition for the Habs.

  • Canadiens' Michael Hage: Game-breaker headed to NCAA

Hage was the 21st overall pick by the Canadiens at the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.

Hage is a high-skill, right-shot center who has size, skill, speed and hockey sense who got off to a sluggish start to his draft season. Last July, his father died in a freak accident. That, and the fact he had played just 13 games the previous season after an injury that required surgery, contributed to a slow start to 2023-24. Hage regained his footing after Christmas, and he put up 51 points in his final 30 games. His game needs development, especially away from the puck, and he'll get it at the University of Michigan come September. Hage has game-breaking skill, and with the right development, he could be among the top pivots who emerge from this draft.

  • Canadiens' Ivan Demidov: Game-changer falls to Habs at five

Demidov was the fifth overall pick by the Canadiens in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Friday.

Demidov is an elite offensive talent who thrives in tight. His stickhandling rivals Mitch Marner's, and his shot and vision are already top-six ready. Yes, there's risk in his game, but that comes with all elite offensive teenagers. Demidov's skill and ability to think the game far ahead of the play makes him a potential play-driving top-line RW and he plays with an edge All of that means Demidov has the pieces to break the century mark in points a few seasons after he arrives in the NHL in a year.

  • Canadiens' Lias Andersson: Signs in Switzerland

Andersson signed a two-year contract with EHC Biel of the Swiss League on Thursday.

Andersson spent the 2023-24 season with AHL Laval, picking up 21 goals and 45 points in 53 games. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, Andersson has played only 110 games at the NHL level since being drafted by the Rangers, scoring seven goals and adding 10 assists over that span.
