  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Swats homer Wednesday

Tatis went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a 4-0 win against Houston on Wednesday.

Tatis struck out in each of his first three at-bats but came up clutch in his final plate appearance, swatting a solo shot that ended up being the first of back-to-back-to-back homers by San Diego. The long ball extended Tatis' hitting streak to eight games, during which he's slashed .364/.382/.848 with five home runs, nine RBI, nine runs and two stolen bases. Tatis has either hit a homer or swiped a bag in all but one game during that span.

  • Padres' Tanner Scott: Records save Wednesday

Scott picked up a save against Houston on Wednesday by retiring both batters he faced, including one by strikeout.

Dylan Cease gave San Diego 8.1 scoreless frames, and Scott was brought in to finish off the Astros with a pair of runners on base in the ninth. The reliever struck out Yordan Alvarez, then got Alex Bregman to fly out to end the game. The save was Scott's 21st of the season but his first since Aug. 27, as most of his saves came while he was with Miami prior to the trade deadline. Robert Suarez, who pitched the previous three days, remains the most likely Padres reliever to handle save chances for the club.

  • Padres' Donovan Solano: Goes yard Wednesday

Solano went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Astros.

Solano salvaged his stat line with an eighth-inning solo homer off Kaleb Ort, the infielder's seventh long ball of the campaign. In September, Solano is 8-for-37 (.216) with five runs and two RBI.

  • Padres' Manny Machado: Clubs two more homers

Machado went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs during Saturday's 4-0 win over the Astros.

It's Machado's second multi-homer performance in 11 games -- the third baseman is 17-for-45 with eight multi-hit games, six home runs and 18 RBI in that stretch. Machado boasts an .814 OPS in 609 plate appearances for the season.

  • Padres' Dylan Cease: Dominates Houston

Cease (14-11) picked up the win Wednesday against the Astros, allowing two hits and no walks with five strikeouts across 8.1 scoreless innings.

Cease couldn't quite go the distance Wednesday, falling two outs short of a shutout as he was pulled after 103 pitches. Still, it was a masterful performance from the 28-year-old, especially considering he had allowed three or more runs in three of his previous four starts. Through 184.1 innings, Cease has a 3.42 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. His 220 strikeouts rank second in baseball. He's tentatively scheduled for a road start against the Dodgers next week.

  • Padres' Luis Arraez: Idle Wednesday

Arraez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.

Arraez sustained a lower-body injury in Monday's 3-1 win in the series opener, but he was back in the lineup for Tuesday's 4-3 loss, serving as the Padres' designated hitter while going hitless in five at-bats. The Padres haven't indicated that Arraez experienced a setback Tuesday, but the recent injury coupled with a matchup against a tough lefty (Framber Valdez) may have factored into manager Mike Shildt's decision to give the 27-year-old the night off. Arraez had started in each of the Friars' previous 15 games.

  • Padres' Kyle Higashioka: Resting Wednesday

Higashioka is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros.

He'll take a seat for the series finale after picking up starts behind the plate Monday and Tuesday. Elias Diaz will handle catching duties Wednesday in Higashioka's stead.

  • Padres' Michael King: Seven strong innings against Astros

King did not factor into the decision in Tuesday's loss to the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out seven in seven innings.

The Astros got to King with four hits and a pair of runs in the fourth but were otherwise held in check. King reached seven innings for the first time since July 21 and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts. For the year, King owns a 3.04 ERA, which ranks eighth among qualifiers and fourth in the National League. He'll look to continue rolling in a crucial matchup against the Dodgers next week.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Swipes bag in loss

Tatis went 2-for-5 with a double, a steal and two runs scored in Tuesday's loss to the Astros.

Tatis scored the team's first run of the game on a two-run homer from Manny Machado in the sixth. Tatis has now hit safely in seven straight games with four homers, eight RBI and eight runs scored over that span. His sixth-inning steal brought him up to double digits for the fifth straight season since he broke in to Major League Baseball. For the year, he's slashing .283/.348/.485 with 18 homers, 45 RBI, 61 runs and a 30:83 BB:K in 399 plate appearances.

Machado went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Tuesday's loss to the Astros.

He now has four homers, seven multi-hit performances and 16 RBI over his last 10 games. Machado started off slow this year with six homers and 33 RBI in the first 70 games, and over his last 73 games he's turned things around with 21 homers and 69 RBI while hitting for a .305 average.

  • Padres' Luis Arraez: Back in action Tuesday

Arraez (lower body) is back in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Astros.

Arraez departed Monday's series opener after suffering the injury on a play at the plate during the fifth inning, but he won't end up missing additional time. The 27-year-old went 2-for-4 with a double and a strikeout prior to exiting the contest, which ended a 30-game streak without being punched out.

  • Padres' Jackson Merrill: Homers in Monday's win

Merrill went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 3-1 win over the Astros.

Merrill has broken out of a recent slump by logging multiple hits in three of his last four games. The rookie is batting .295 (26-for-88) with seven homers over his last 24 contests. He's up to a .290/.322/.504 slash line with 24 homers, 86 RBI, 74 runs scored and 16 stolen bases through 146 contests overall. His well-rounded production and relatively good health have him firmly in the NL Rookie of the Year conversation.

  • Padres' Jurickson Profar: Homers in four-hit game

Profar went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and an additional run scored in Monday's 3-1 win over the Astros.

The only blemish on Profar's stat line was when he was caught stealing in the third inning. His bat started to fade in late August, but the outfielder has gone 14-for-43 (.326) with five extra-base hits and nine walks over 12 contests in September. This has been his best season to date, as Profar is slashing .285/.386/.467 with 23 homers, 83 RBI and 87 runs scored, all of which are career highs. He's added nine stolen bases and 27 doubles.
