  • Athletics' Tyler Ferguson: Snags fourth victory Wednesday

Ferguson (4-2) got the win against the Cubs on Wednesday, firing a scoreless seventh inning during which he issued a walk.

Ferguson threw only three of his 10 pitches for strikes, but he was able to get through the seventh frame unscathed and then saw the Athletics snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth to make him the pitcher of record. Ferguson has now strung together four consecutive scoreless appearances after a rocky early-September stretch during which he surrendered five runs (four earned) across 3.1 innings over four appearances.

  • Athletics' Brent Rooker: Another productive offensive day

Rooker went 2-for-3 with an RBI infield single, a stolen base and a walk in a win over the Cubs on Wednesday. He was also caught stealing on another attempt.

Rooker continued his torrid September run Wednesday with his eighth multi-hit effort in 17 games. The slugger got it done with some small ball in the matinee victory after having belted his 36th and 37th home runs of the season on back-to-back days to begin the week. Rooker's on-base streak now sits at 28 games as well, a stretch that dates back to Aug. 20 and has seen him generate a .357/.421/.634 slash line with 13 extra-base hits and 27 RBI across 126 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Belts eighth homer

Soderstrom went 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Cubs.

He got the A's on the board in the fourth inning with a solo shot off Ethan Roberts. It was Soderstrom's first homer in four games since being activated from the IL, and his eighth of the year in 53 contests. With four hits in two games during this series at Wrigley Field, the 22-year-old has boosted his slash line on the season to .224/.304/.410.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Sets franchise rookie record

Miller walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to collect his 27th save of the season in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Cubs.

The flame-throwing righty set a new Oakland rookie record for saves in the process. Miller has been lights out since returning from the IL in early August, converting all 12 of his save chances during that stretch with a 2.70 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 26:6 K:BB in 20 innings.

  • Athletics' Brady Basso: Fans five in no-decision

Basso came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Cubs, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.

The rookie southpaw blanked Chicago through four innings before faltering in the fifth, getting the hook after 93 pitches (60 strikes). It's the first time in three big-league starts that Basso has failed to complete five frames, and only the second time in six appearances he's been charged with any earned runs at all. He'll take a 2.33 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB through 19.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Rangers.

  • Athletics' Max Schuemann: Getting day off

Schuemann is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Cubs.

Schuemann manned third base for the Athletics in each of the previous five games, but he will begin Wednesday's contest on the bench. Nick Allen will handle the hot corner and bat ninth.

  • Athletics' Seth Brown: Out again versus lefty

Brown is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

The Cubs are starting a third straight lefty in the series in Justin Steele, and the left-handed-hitting Brown has been out of the lineup for all three contests, although he did receive a couple plate appearances off the bench Tuesday. Tyler Nevin is in left field for Wednesday's series finale.

  • Athletics' JJ Bleday: Out against left-hander

Bleday is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Cubs.

The Cubs are sending lefty Justin Steele to the hill, so the left-handed-hitting Bleday will begin the game on the bench. Daz Cameron will get a start in center field for the Athletics.

  • Athletics' Shea Langeliers: Goes yard twice in win

Langeliers went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Cubs.

Both blasts came off Jordan Wicks, as Langeliers launched a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth. The 26-year-old has only three hits in his last 20 at-bats, but all three have left the yard. On the season, Langeliers is slashing .220/.280/.448 with 28 homers, 74 RBI, 54 runs and four stolen bases.

  • Athletics' Mason Miller: Collects 26th save

Miller gave up one run on one hit in the ninth inning Tuesday but escaped his 26th save of the season in a 4-3 win over the Cubs. He struck out two.

He served up a solo shot to Ian Happ to make things interesting, but Miller still converted his 14th straight save chance, a streak that stretches back to June 18. With 26 saves, the right-hander has tied Oakland's rookie record, a mark set by Andrew Bailey in 2009. Over 59.2 innings this year, Miller boasts a 2.41 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 95:19 K:BB.

  • Athletics' Mitch Spence: Nabs eighth win

Spence (8-9) picked up the win in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Cubs, giving up two runs on seven hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out six.

It's the right-hander's first win since July 27. Spence didn't pitch poorly during that eight-start winless streak, however, posting a 4.01 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 35:13 K:BB over 42.2 innings. He lines up to make his final start of 2024 at home next week against the Rangers.

  • Athletics' Austin Adams: Still awaiting evaluation

Adams, who recently suffered a setback with his forearm injury, is still waiting to be evaluated by team doctors, MLB.com reports.

Adams saw a planned rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas scrapped due to the setback, and he was sent back to Oakland for an evaluation. However, as of Monday, that testing had yet to occur, casting further doubt on the veteran reliever's chances of returning before the end of the regular season.

  • Athletics' Osvaldo Bido: Still idle after IL placement

Bido (wrist) is with the Athletics but has yet to begin playing catch since going on the IL last Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Bido had been dealing with the wrist issue for several starts before finally getting to the point where he was having difficulty gripping the ball, so his recovery could potentially carry through the end of the regular season. Manager Mark Kotsay remains hopeful the promising right-hander will be able to make it back for at least one more start, yet time is working against Bido at this point with less than two weeks remaining in the 2024 campaign.

  • Athletics' Ross Stripling: Bullpen session on tap

Stripling (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday and another several days after, MLB.com reports.

The veteran right-hander has been on the injured list since last Tuesday with a lower-back strain, and Wednesday will mark the first time he'll attempt to do any throwing since that point. If all goes well with the session, Stripling is slated to repeat the process at some point after the Athletics begin a homestand Friday against the Yankees. Despite the recent developments, a return for Stripling before the end of the regular season isn't a certainty in the view of manager Mark Kotsay, per the Associated Press.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: First hits since return

Soderstrom went 2-for-4 in a loss to the Cubs on Monday.

Soderstrom had gone 0-for-7 in his first two games back from the injured list, but he was able to break the ice Monday by generating one of the Athletics' trio of two-hit efforts. Soderstrom is slated to continue seeing everyday playing time at first base for what remains of the regular season, ahead of what figures to be a pivotal offseason for his development.

  • Athletics' Jacob Wilson: Productive in leadoff role

Wilson went 2-for-4 with a triple, a walk and a run in a loss to the Cubs on Monday.

Wilson worked out of the leadoff spot for only the second time in his nascent MLB career and made good use of the opportunity. He led the game off with his second career triple, but it was his third-inning walk that led to his run, as Brent Rooker drove the rookie home with his two-run blast. Wilson now has a trio of two-hit efforts in the last nine games, and it remains to be seen if his move up in the order was just an outlier or indicative of where he'll primarily slot in for what remains of the regular season.
