Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow's UK General Election, it is imperative that all political parties recommit to modern data policies. This will ensure the UK can fully harness the power of data-driven and digital technologies which are crucial for economic growth and improved public services. One step forward two steps Black? We want to hear your experiences of what it’s like to be Black in PR and comms today. Together with PRWeek UK and Opinium, we are opening our One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse pipeline and retaining talent, and crucially - to provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. The inaugural One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey in 2020 found that almost half of Black communication professionals had never received an internal promotion, with talent having to move to a different agency or company to rise up the ranks.  Has progress been made? We’re proud to be the first agency in the North East to become members of IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) Media Climate Charter, taking a measurable step forward in transitioning our business – and the wider media industry – to a zero-carbon future.   As part of our commitment to tackle climate change, Climate Charter membership brings us the tools, resources, and collective power to make a positive and lasting impact. Using its Media Carbon Calculator, we can now establish the carbon impact of developing, producing, and running advertising and marketing campaigns for our clients, with a view to reducing this to real net zero by 2030. We hope these carbon impact reports will be a starting point for adopting greener practices and sourcing sustainably-minded supply chain partners to genuinely reduce carbon emissions throughout the campaign process. BLOG ✍ I attended a fantastic CIM | The Chartered Institute of Marketing webinar last month led by Edwina Mullins, Founder and Owner of digital marketing agency SocialB. Working in public sector in particular, marketers are having to work with small or even zero budget. Edwina gave some great tips on how to get buy in from the very start with senior leadership teams to demonstrate how having a healthy budget can create even more effective campaigns to achieve business goals. Inspiring the next generation of internal communicators... Thank you to Witherslack Group for inviting me to talk about internal comms and employee engagement at two schools this week. It was brilliant to be able to share the wide range of skills and the variety of work that make up a career in internal comms - a role many students still don't realise exists. They've started to develop so many of those core skills already, like building relationships, listening and showing empathy to more practical skills from blogging and video/podcast production through to creating an effective social media post. Not to mention their data handling skills! They are great internal comms pros in the making. #InternalComms #EmployeeEngagement #IChoseIC

I’m looking forward to hosting Institute of Internal Communication’s series of four webinars this autumn, taking us up to December. We’re covering four critical comms topics: trust, activism, strategy and change. All will be great, and the panels are brilliant. Take a look on the IoIC website (Events) for more info and to book a place. The first one is on trust on 23 September. I don’t think we delve enough into activism. Employees have a growing passion to work for ethical, socially conscious organisations. People want to know a potential employer’s values reflect their own. Organisations need to take a stance on the big issues. What do you want me to ask the panel?

What’s driving the evolution of brand purpose? 🌏 🧒 ❤️ ✊ Last week we hosted a thought provoking roundtable with comms leaders across private, public, and non-profit sectors, who shared their experiences and views of a rapidly changing landscape. There's only so much you can cover in an hour, but some of the key takeaways: - We're moving from purpose vs profit > to purpose with profit - Purpose can be a north star, but it must be anchored to something more than the end goal, such as values - Australia once led on progressive issues, but not so much anymore - Society's rage presents an opportunity for brands to educate and unite - There is strength in numbers when tackling sensitive issues - Purpose is evolving from planet to people-first - Youth are demanding rapid change from inside and out - There's a cost of not investing in purpose The findings will feed into Havas Red's global Purpose white paper, coming out in October.
