The surgical gloves are off in the trailer ABC just dropped for Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy. Not only does it appear that Catherine is suing Meredith over ownership of her groundbreaking Alzheimer’s research, but the boss lashes out at Bailey for standing with the interns in defense of Lucas. “You think you’re God’s gift to this hospital?” Catherine scoffs. “You’re just another doctor.”
“Talk to the hand,” Miranda replies — not in words, though, with a slap!
Elsewhere in the extended promo, Richard and Winston have their hands full with a bungee jumper whose cord snapped. Jules and Mika face the awkward aftermath of their near kiss. After years and years away, Kali Rocha’s Dr. Sydney Heron is back to “heal with love.” And Jo — as she as well as we knew that she’d have to eventually — tries to broach the subject of her surprise pregnancy with significant other Link. (Forgot that she really is expecting? Our Season 20 finale recap can fill in the blanks.)
As you may have read, when Grey’s Anatomy returns on Thursday, Sept. 26, there will be changes left, right and center. For starters, the long-running drama has a new time slot — 10/9c. On top of that, Jason George, who spent the last seven seasons fighting fires as Ben on much-missed spinoff Station 19, will be bringing back Bailey’s husband to complete his medical residency. Jake Borelli (Levi) and Midori Francis (Mika) are on their way out, and on his way in is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist alum Michael Thomas Grant as James, Grey Sloan’s new chaplain.
To check out the trailer, press PLAY on the video at the top of this post. And don’t worry: We won’t judge if you rewind to watch Catherine get smacked a few times.
OMG! #fire I can’t wait for the fallout from that slap.
Ugh, I hate this storyline. We are supposed to root for Meredith, but in my opinion she has handled this wrong from the beginning. As far as I can see she doesn’t own her research, she was paid to do it by the foundation and has no leg to stand on. They are desperately trying to turn Katherine into the villain in other ways to make Meredith’s behaviour more palatable. Why do I feel like Jackson is going to swoop in and force Katherine to retire or something so that Meredith can take over and do whatever she wants – AS USUAL. Blech. Why do I watch this show again?
Do yourself a favor and just let it go. The show took a wrong turn with how they wrote off Karev, and I stopped watching. I get curious from time to time what’s going on now, so I read recaps like this and I don’t regret my choice to stop watching.
So you come across a potential cure to a disease that has not only robbed you of loved ones, but you know willntake you from your kids in the future.
And you’re just going to fall in line and follow suit because of BS politics… Is meredith right? Not a hundred percent, but come on, It is so understandable, especially because catherine, after seeing results is playing petty games.
The benefit of being an adult is you realize the problem is on both sides. That’s literally what creates the drama.
Fair enough. Catherine is certainly letting the lack of respect she is getting from her ’employees’ cloud her judgement. But legally speaking she is completely in the right. If Meredith would actually talk to her like an adult, then maybe they could have resolved the issue like adults.
But I guess that would make for boring TV :)
This is reminding me of the Elbe bag (sp) situation with Denny all over again. Meredith and Company think they know what’s best so they do what they want to do and then somebody else has to clean up their mess
Right. Any work that anybody does while they are under the employment of somebody is property of the employer. If they are getting paid and on the clock, they don’t own it. I’m not a fan of Catherine, but here Meredith doesn’t have a leg to stand on. Publishing the research does not make the work any more Meredith’s, and any less the foundations.
Meredith was not funded by the foundation. Does she even work at a hospital funded by them?
Amelia did the work in her own time, not while she was at the hospital. She was not on Catherine’s clock and was not being paid while she did the research.
Catherine refused to fund the research and shut down the idea. Why should she benefit from it?
When Meredith went to visit Jackson, he essentially gave her what she needed to do her research. Resources to do the research and money backing. Hense foundation involvement.
As for the hospital funds, they are owned by the foundation, most of it anyway. That is why Altman lost her job because she did it anyway despite knowing she shouldn’t. So the foundation has a really good case for any results produced.
Katherine refused to fund Meredith and Amelia’s research so why would she own it? Yes the money came from Teddy’s discretionary funds (which are Teddy’s to use however she wishes). But Meredith and Amelia did the work on their own time.
There is no reason for Katherine to own the research except very bad writing.
Catherine by way of her foundation on the hospital that gave Teddy the funds to discretionally give to Meredith
Excited for that slap and to see how it affects Bailey and Richard! I hope we get a longer trailer soon to get more of an idea of Levi’s exiting storyline and what is happening to Teddy as Chief.
I stand with Lucas. But Catherine is right Bailey and Meredith are just doctors no matter how great they are, they should respect Catherine’s authority and the place they work in. I hope the writers go with a bold plot and show us what Burak said to Cristina in season 10 how he had a fallout after winning Harper Avery and had to rebuilt, and these will be Meredith and Bailey fallout and real damage happen to their reputation. tey can’t keep them winning forever
I’m not defending Meredith, but you forget one thing. Meredith is one of the owners of the hospital. In fact, I’d wager she might own as much or even slightly more of a percentage than the foundation as she has her shares, Lexi’s shares and Derek’s shares. So was it really Catherine’s place to tell her the research belongs to the hospital? I’m not so sure.
You make a great point. That may factor into the fight because otherwise, I don’t see how she would be able to take it with her. I assume though this will all get resolved by her coming back into the hospital anyway. I know they have to drag it out a bit though so there is some storyline. I cannot stand Catherine so I am happy with a slap, even if it is incredibly unprofessional.
I looked it up, apparently the current owning distribution is as follows:
Current owners: Catherine Fox Foundation (69.17%), Meredith Grey (11.86%), Richard Webber (1.19%), Callie Torres (5.93%), Arizona Robbins (5.93%) and Tom Koracick (5.93%).
So the foundation has the majority share in the hospital.
wouldn’t a slap classified as “a physical assault” like someone mention?
Meredith has shares in the hospital but not the foundation where she conducted her research.
Lexie’s shares of the settlement went to Thatcher. They were never invested into the hospital. Regardless Meredith wasn’t working for the hospital doing her research. She was working for the foundation.
I find amusing that it seems we, the viewers, are the only ones who know Meredith owns part of the hospital, because her actions prove she doesn’t. Some seasons ago, she almost lost her license because she operated on a little girl whose father didn’t have insurance and she falsified information when she could have just done the operation pro bono.
Owning a share in a business doesn’t mean having the right to interfere whenever you want. That’s why Meredith committed fraud for the operation and couldn’t reverse Catherine decision to cut off her research funding and went behind her back with Teddy.
I know I’m judging before seeing the whole scene but there is no reason to justify a physical assault, and it doesn’t matter what insults or facts Catherine might have said. Baily made a terrible mistake. What exactly is she trying to teach residents here? I hope she faces real consequences and damage to her reputation too.
It’s good they can’t play the race card here because this is a serious topic too. I’m interested to see how it will be written and handled.
The writers need to stop treating some characters as queens whose mistakes are always justified and twisted into heroic actions.
Anyone else feel like they ramped up Catherine’s “spiky” nature towards the end of last season for the drama?
She’s always been stubborn and hot headed but just feels like they suddenly wanted a villain so made her just meaner.
She’s not without professional reasons for some things, but felt a bit pantomime.
I’m assuming it’s her cancer getting worse.
Ooh, love the slap. Catherine vs. Bailey should be good.
But who styles Meredith? It just gets worse and worse. Those glasses are awful.
Lmao too funny
SLAP HER WILLONA!
I mean Bailey!
It was always obvious that the writers of this show know nothing about medical research or publishing but this story is completely cringe-worthy. Anyone with half a brain (apparently not Catherine) would encourage any research that could make them that much money. Catherine is beyond stupid.
I don’t care about Jo and Linc (they ruined a good couple in Amelia and Linc to get there), don’t care about the new residents or 90% of the characters.
This show should have been retired years ago. It gets more and more ridiculous.
I have to wonder what you know about medical research. Medical research gets underfunded and suppressed all the time. Nobody wants to cure anything anymore, they just want to treat stuff. A cure is done one time and at a price point that is out of the reach of the average citizen . A treatment is a lifetime and you get to take someone’s paycheck over and over and over again . They also just want to continue to collect money to make you aware of stuff then they’re not curing
I am willing to take a wait/see approach–but that Bailey slap seems out of character. Miranda would never assault her boss and in front of their direct reports? She is way smarter than that. Talk about grounds for immediate termination.
Bailey gets on my nerves
Wait I didn’t think they’d actually lean into Mika and Jules since Mika is leaving? But I’m excited to see that even though it won’t last. Surprised they don’t tease anything for Simone and Adams.
