If you were holding your breath in anticipation of a potential second season of Mare of Easttown you should, um, stop doing that.
HBO announced Thursday that it has ordered a new limited series from Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby that features neither Kate Winslet nor, presumably, a Wawa. The new project in question — which remains untitled — instead stars Mark Ruffalo and centers on a task force of law enforcement officers and the criminals they are trying to apprehend.
Per HBO, casting decisions were made prior to the current writers’ strike, and “no further development has occurred since the strike began.” As a result, there is no timetable for the start of production.
Although it was initially billed as a limited series when it debuted in 2021, Mare of Easttown‘s critical and commercial success — not to mention its four Emmys — opened the door to a possible Season 2.
“If we can crack a story that is as great [as Season 1] and that would do justice to the characters and carry on the story in a way that was organic and yet surprising, I would love to do it,” Ingelsby previously told TVLine. “I just don’t know what the story is. That’s the issue right now.
“We gave Mare such a personal arc where she had to confront this loss in her life, and we would have to construct another emotional arc that was able to compete with [that],” the EP continued. “And I’m also acutely aware of the dangers of doing a Season 2 just because you have the [opportunity] to do it. I would only want to do it if we were convinced we had something great.”
Winslet similarly told TVLine that she “would absolutely love to play Mare again,” adding, “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role… There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
Was someone expecting a season 2? It was a limited series.
Considering that other HBO limited series like Big Little Lies, The White Lotus, and Perry Mason all received second seasons after having popular first seasons, it certainly wasn’t out of the realm of possibility for the same to happen with Mare, considering its success.
I wouldn’t mind another season of Mare–but please replace Kate Winslet. IMO she’s not a very good actress. She seems to always play the tortured victim.
Guy wrote this for attention
No one believed BLL’s second season was anything more than a bag grab for Reese and HBO. It’s distinctly possible Meryl’s presence made it worse, and it was not a critical or ratings success.
White Lotus completely resets every season, Coolidge’s character notwithstanding. It’s literally built to be something different every season.
Perry Mason is at least based on a multi season canon.
It’s impossible to reset Mare without exposing the same flaws that followed BLL – inventing a sequel to a story that had thoroughly ended.
BLL?
I for one am thrilled there won’t be a season two. I thought the ending was perfect and they handled the whole season very gracefully; I wouldn’t want to tarnish that with the possibility of a potential weaker season two. Not everything needs to be extended into more movies or seasons.
Mark Ruffalo instead of Kate Winslet…hardly a fair trade off.
In another interview, Kate Winslet talked about how difficult it was playing that role. Plus she admitted there was a debate about whether they should do a season 2.
So I’m not surprised that they are moving on at this point.
I also won’t be surprised if they pick up a sequel 10 years later.
Utterly impossible to do a second season of this show. ProCos just don’t know when to quit.
Yes! Mark Ruffalo, I can’t wait.
For the love of god, being sad about letting go your beloved character you embodied is NOT the same as mourning, not even close, not even subjectively, not even in your mind or feeling.
I just watched this movie, ‘Mare of Easttown’, and fell in love with it, the storyline, the characters, the PLACE!! Philadelphia USA. To my delight it is a part of my country, as it felt like a place in Britain. It brought me back to the reality that my country is the daughter of an old old world. The story: at first I wasn’t too enthused, by the end of the 1st episode I found myself quietly absorbed and quickly moved on to the 2nd. From that point on I was rushing to each episode until late at night it ended. I hurried to see if there was a second season only to find DRAMA, that there may not be & if there was to be a second season it would be, OMG, without Kate, although she said she would LOVE to play Mare again. NOW I am in limbo. What’s become of the series in 7-2023? Thank you for your time.
Winslet can continue with Mare. There are some jumping off points for more stories. Her honed in skills as a detective, moving her own life forward, her daughter coming home etc…alot of possibilities here Mr. Inglesby. You’re the creator…just create and just like the tag line in Field of Dreams…”if you build it…they will come” So…just write and the public will watch!
I think you all should do a season two. Please make sure to continue where season one left off. We all are waiting!!!
Oh, and keep Kate!! Hurry up with it we have been waiting tooooooo long!! Thanks!
Please do a season 2, Kate was so amazing in this !!!
I hope so much that Mare of Easttown will come back, I love the suspense!!
You can’t have a 2nd series without Kate Winslet. The series was her. Why bother if your not going to continue a fantastic character with a new story line. What a waste.
Please do a second season!! Loved it!
Mare of Easttown is one of my favorites. I was hoping for a season 2 but if there is NO Kate Winslet, then DON”T waste time with a season 2. SHE is Mare of Easttown.
The Mare of Easttown should most definitely have a 2nd season. It was a wonderful season!
