The Erin McMenamin murder case is officially closed… but does that mean Mare of Easttown is handing in her badge?
The Kate Winslet-led HBO crime drama wrapped up its seven-episode run on Sunday night — read our finale recap here — and while it’s been billed as a limited series from the beginning, ratings have been steadily growing each week, with 2 million viewers tuning in for last week’s penultimate episode across all platforms, per the network. That, plus all the positive critical buzz, could have HBO changing its plans and thinking about bringing it back for a Season 2. After all, Big Little Lies was considered a limited series at first, even competing in that category at the Emmys, before returning for a sophomore run.
Officially, HBO is still calling Mare a limited series as of now, with the drama set to compete in the Limited Series categories at this year’s Emmys. (TVLine has reached out to HBO to inquire about Mare‘s Season 2 status.) And maybe keeping it a close-ended story is the best thing for it. Series director/EP Craig Zobel says that Winslet’s Mare Sheehan “is an amazing character, so I would be excited to see” a second season, but “I also like it as a miniseries.”
But there’s one person who definitely wants to see more of Mare: the star herself, Kate Winslet. “I would absolutely love to play Mare again,” she tells TVLine when asked about the prospect of a Season 2. “I miss her. I really do. It’s the strangest thing. I feel like I’m in mourning. It was an absolutely wonderful role… There’s something very addictive about Mare, because she’s so outrageous and lovable and brilliant and real, you know? I loved playing her.”
Would you watch a Season 2 of Mare of Easttown? What storylines would you want to see more of? Drop your thoughts in a comment below.
Great series! Yes to a second season with Kate Winslet and Jean Smart.
I wholeheartedly agree! The acting was superb in all cases. Kate Winslet did a wonderful job.I would like more stories of Mare and family.
PLEASE, DON’T DO IT! I am not going to compare everything to BLL, but HBO should know better than to mess with a good thing. I also think back to Broadchurch and how the first season was perfect, the next two were awful. I know we always yearn for more, but this series was perfect and I can see it turning into Broadchurch season 2.
If you don’t want a season 2, just don’t watch! I want another journey with her please!!!!
Agree agree agree!!!! Loved the show so want mote!!!!!
Lol MORE
Oh calm down. Who said I wouldn’t watch a second season?! Get off your high horse. I was voicing an opinion about what I’ve seen when limited series are suddenly turned into regular series because of ratings.
I for one loved the second season of BLL, and although I didn’t love the second season of Broadchurch (still liked it but thought it was the weakest of the 3), I enjoy the third one a lot. I think with these shows, for me, it’s more about the characters than the actual mystery.
Happy Valley had a good second season. It can happen.
It was perfect. Let it end.
I would absolutely LOVE another season of Mare!!! I would like to see how Mare and Lori’s relationship pans out, also if her relationship with Richard survives the year long separation.
If and I do mean ONLY if they can write to the same quality then heck yes. Otherwise, let it be.
Absolutely. Great series. I want another mystery for Mare, like Bosch, etc. These series are great television.
I absolutely would. I was so sad when it was as over. Kate Winslet and the supporting actors were terrific! Hopefully there will be more Mare of Eastside!!
OMG, yes to a second season! One of the best shows I have seen this entire year! I hope she is nominated for an Emmy as well as the series!
Thought Kate was so brave to do this role. . No glam, just great acting all around. I was totally drawn in to the stories and the characters. Well cast, I thought. Too bad Zabel died, but I liked Guy Pearce’s role, too. Subtle.
It’s tricky. Season 2 will have to compete with season 1. Mare grew a lot emotionally in season 1. You have to assume that growth continues, as we last saw her heading up to the “attic”. I really don’t see Mare leaving Easttown.
Would a sleepy little town like Easttown have another complex murder mystery? I suppose she could venture out say if her daughter went missing from college or something. I would certainly watch a second season but it would be tricky for it to live up to season 1.
Completely agree. I was wondering how long it would take for this to come up. Answer: not long.
Meant this to reply to J above. I don’t think there should be a second season. Why label something limited if it’s not going to be? How can they equal the quality?
Thanks CB. The creators and actors did a great job and we have seen time and time again that the intended limited series magic cannot be replicated in an additional, unplanned season 2.
I think the creators are very talented. So, they can do a new amazing season. People should not underestimate their skills. But we can agree to disagree lol! Anyway, I’m sure they will do it…
Mare was a superb production. It’s realistic story pacing and visual presentation far superior to anything else. Returning to her life would be a gift to your audience. Pam
When they make limited series continue for more seasons just because it big hit. It usually ruin the great series it once was. Mostly because the story is done and they have to make up something more which is not as good and they do it just for the money. How many murders can Mare solve it that small town? It’s not New York where you have murder every week
In lit classes, we were taught to “suspend our disbelief” over minor details like more than one crime in a small town. There are many successful Hallmark mystery series where small town folk become victims of yet another crime about every 3 months. I sometimes wonder how that crossword puzzle editor keeps stumbling upon dead bodies, but without it there is no show. Suspend.
Please give us more of Mare!!
Haven’t looked forward to HBO on a Sunday night so much since The Sopranos!
More Mare, please! More Kate Winslet! More Jean Smart! More story lines in that quaint town.
Absolutely adored Kate Winslet in her role as Mare, and would LOVE to see the series extended on and on and on — as long as Ms. Winslet wishes to stay with the character. And please, HBO, please DO NOT cancel this series on HBO and start streaming it on anything else !! Cable expenses are high enough without having to pay for all these streaming channels just to be able to watch great programming. Keep It Real on HBO !!!
Why would HBO ever do that? HBO is already a paid for channel even if it’s bundled with some cable/satellite packages.
Why not? If they can have a story of the same magnitude and the same high-quality writing, why not? There were other shows considered limited that came back for a second season, some succeeded, some failed. If Kate Winslet is involved, it’ll never fail. She’s the best actress of my generation full stop. She hit a home run with this, I believe if they bring it back, she’ll hit a grand slam.
Never mind Season 2 this series could run forever. Well written with superb actors and epic twists and turns. Come on HBO sort it out and give us more
Absolutely. Great series. Keep it going! So much more can go on in the town! Great series! Wonderful acting from everyone.
Hope to see another series!
Yes i want a 2nd season please
Yes please. Mare of Easttown was the best show I’ve watched on any network, streaming or networks the past year. I love Kate Winslet and Jean Smart. Please bring them back.
If the writing could be even close to the caliber of this production, I would love to see more of Mare. Kate Winslet has created an unforgettable heroine in Mare Sheehan, & I miss her already. Since she wants to do it, HBO would be crazy not to put the necessary resources into play and make it happen.
Yes I would love to see a season two of Mare of Easton
I wouldn’t mind another season but I think it should be left as a limited series. I would not want the show to become another ‘Big Little Lies’ with a terrible second season after a wonderful first season.
